The Bachelor Blake Garvey is a love rat and we should be baying for his blood

PICTURE this: a hunky man, on bended knee asking for your hand in marriage. Romantic right? In real life we would be baying for Blake Garvey’s blood, declaring him a love rat.

Bachelor finale: Blake proposes

Romantic right? Every girl’s dream? Perhaps, if you’re into Mills and Boon cliches.

But does it still make your heart go flutter when you know the hunk in question spent the night before his grand proposal in the arms of another woman, declaring his love for her?

And what if said heart-throb had the week before that been seen with a buxom brunette mounting him in a spa.

In real life we would be baying for Blake Garvey’s blood, declaring him a love rat.

Yet, for some reason, when a bloke wines and dines a bevy of beauties before popping the question on a TV show all the standard rules of behaviour go out the window.

Suddenly people are swooning at the romance of it all and gleefully cheering on The Bachelor and his lucky chosen bride.

Not me. I, for one, think it was ludicrous for a pair of people who have dated only a handful of times with a production crew filming their every intimate moment to have even thought about getting married.

Whose family or friends could genuinely be happy for a couple who get engaged under such circumstances? Surely, people outside the vacuum of a reality TV series would have had the sense to tell these two that getting married was a very bad idea.

I know I would be sceptical whether “true love” could be found on TV after a few dawn hot air balloon rides and yacht trips together.

But, now that the cameras have stopped rolling and Channel 10 have stopped picking up the tab and planning ridiculously over-the-top dates, it’s become apparent that Sam and Blake didn’t have much in common besides the fact they over-shared their emotions on TV.

Colour me surprised.

The writing was on the wall before the final episode aired.

On Thursday, Ten declared that there would be no interviews with the supposedly engaged couple or runner up — or as I like to call her, the lucky escapee- Lisa Hyde.

Or any of the many other women involved in the show for that matter.

This was highly unusual for a show like this and sent the rumour mill into overdrive with, amongst other things, pregnancy speculation and cheating allegations.

Something was up because reality contestants are rarely so media shy.

Last year’s couple, Tim Robards and Anna Heinrich, were -and still are — front and centre at

every media opportunity telling anyone listening how much in love they are.

At least they had the good sense to not get engaged after meeting in the show.

They’re still together but no one is headed down the aisle any time soon.

The whole Frost-Garvey unengagement just highlights how unromantic The Bachelor really is.

Strip away the champagne, the ball gowns, the single-stem red roses and the Barbara Cartland-esque dates and you have a handsome but (in my opinion) boring man leading on a bunch of desperate women for our entertainment.

And, if last year’s runner-up, Rochelle Emanuel-Smith, is to be believed the situations on The Bachelor may be manufactured but feelings of these contestants are very real.

She was left heartbroken and humiliated after being led to believe she and Robards had a real connection.

Instead she was dumped then expected to film interviews about the experience.

Now what, may I ask, is romantic about that?
