TV specials about Prince Harry and his soon-to- be bride, Meghan Markle have dotted our screens like confetti.
But, with their big day this Saturday, all networks will turn to London for coverage and expertise.
Royal experts who are regulars on our breakfast programs — Robert Jobson for Sunrise, Camilla Twominey for Nine’s Today and Katie Nicholls for Today Extra — provide informed insight in When Harry Met Meghan, a standout Lifestyle doco, which retells this royal love story and the future that awaits them.
While their courtship has been well-documented, this special, finds interesting parallels between the couple; as well as exploring their vastly different childhoods and family heritage.
Born four days after his parents were wed in 1981, Meghan — like Harry — would struggle to make a name for herself, dealing with her own fractured family and a failed ‘starter marriage.’
Tracing back her family roots to coal miners in Yorkshire, under the reign of Queen Victoria, her pedigree is one of working class struggle; while his privileged life was thwart by the damaging unravelling of his parents’ marriage and the tragedy of his mother’s car crash death.
Twominey, who broke the world exclusive on Harry’s secret romance with the Suits star, believes the former actress — like Diana — will remain her own woman, even within the confines of Palace walls.
“If she wants to be more independent, then that’s not all bad for the Monarchy,” she says, in the one-hour special. “Moving forward, I don’t think modern working women want princesses to be seen and not heard … they want them to make a contribution to public life in a very vocal sense.”
In other revelations, Nicholls claims the prince had an eye for Meghan two years before they were set up in July 2016, by mutual friend Marcus Anderson, at private members club, Soho House.
“I was having drinks with one of his friends and she told me she’d been on a night out with Prince Harry. He was single at the time and she said to him ‘so Harry, who is your ideal girl?’ and he said then, ‘Meghan Markle from Suits.’
