Wentworth recap: The Freak is back behind bars but is she faking her amnesia?

In another action-packed episode of Wentworth, The Freak has returned but not everyone is buying what she’s selling. And who’s been tortured by Allie? WARNING: Spoilers

Don’t want to alarm anyone, but so far divisive recycled character Judy Bryant is getting more screen time than The Freak, whose return is the hook this whole new series of Wentworth is being hung on.

Episode six has more Freak than Judy for those keeping score. Finally Joan ‘The Freak’ Ferguson is returning to Wentworth Correctional Centre, but she’s still insisting she’s lost her memory and has taken on the identity of the woman she’s suspected to have murdered – Kath Maxwell.

Ferguson is trucked back to Wentworth and gets the usual greeting party – the trio who tried to kill her by burying her alive – Will, Jake and Vera.

She still stares at them blankly as if she doesn’t recognise them. Vera’s not buying it. Of all people, Vera knows the depths The Freak can sink to. RIP Vera’s mum.

The Freak is seeing prison psych Dr Miller, who seems to be buying her amnesia routine.

“She is neither anxious nor is this in any way new to her,” Vera tells the doc as The Freak looks confused about being back behind bars. “I’m telling you she is faking it and I want you to prove it. Can you do that?”

His key to cracking The Freak is by whipping out some ink blots to see if any trigger her killer instincts. Ferguson only sees butterflies and elephants – prompting an Olympic eye roll from Vera, who is peering on from behind the glass.

Jake even moseys on in for some one-on-one Freak face time, warning her away from hurting his family (as we know she wants to kidnap his daughter Grace).

Top Dog Allie has found out the Freak is back behind bars. “The women are going to destroy her the second she walks back in here,” she warns, also summing up exactly what the Wentworth fans are waiting for.

And that’s our Freakly weekly update. What else is going on?

If you remember Ruby used her day release to track down her sister Rita in witness protection in some pad in the middle of nowhere. She slipped Rita a burner phone and rather than be returned to jail Ruby was kidnapped by some crooked cops who are using her as human bait to get Rita to change her statement that incriminates them for being, well, crooked cops.

Rita somehow uses a bag of ice cubes to remove the ankle bracelet that monitors her movement. She finds her sister and her captors and raises seven shades of hell, leaving one of the shonky cops dead. Ruby gets free, heads back to jail, Rita hitches a ride with a trucker and heads off into the sunset.

The Freak’s dramatic return to Wentworth

Wentworth’s intriguing new cellmate

Problem is no one at the jail knows where Ruby is. So Allie assumes Marie (who wanted to kill Ruby a few episodes ago but has had a change of heart) is responsible. And new mate Judy Bryant surfaces when Allie’s ready to shake the truth out of Marie and gives her some torture tips – a new spin on waterboarding by holding Marie over the crapper and pouring water into her gob. However it doesn’t flush out anything except the fact Judy’s one twisted sister.

The other drama this week comes via background ranger Cynthia Rattray who sexually assaults Reb in his cell, while his GF Lou is out getting her severed and reattached finger some medical attention.

Marie pulls Rattray off Reb, Rattray breaks prison code by lagging on Marie. Reb doesn’t want anyone to know, particularly Lou. Marie’s still doing her creepy thing of acting like Reb is her son. “I’m so piss-weak I can’t even defend myself,” Reb tells Marie. “I want people to see me as a real guy.”

And everyone has a little emo-ending – soundtracked by a cover of Radiohead’s Creep – where The Freak gazes into the mirror. Jake’s been watching The Freak’s reindeer games all day and says to Vera “She never breaks character. Could it be true?”

See you next Tuesday.
