The Voice winner Bella Taylor Smith reveals how she’ll spend $100,000 prize money

With her pockets $100,000 heavier, The Voice winner Bella Taylor Smith revealed her plans for that prize money.

The Voice winner Bella Taylor Smith may be pocketing $100,000 richer after being crowned the winner but she’s not giving up her day job anytime soon.

Taylor Smith, 23, bested fellow finalists G-Nation, Arlo Smith and Mick Harrington to win the public vote last night. For her efforts, she’s been awarded $100,000 prize money and a recording contract with EMI.

She revealed on Sunrise what she planned to do with her bounty.

“Pay some bills and hopefully plan a holiday when everything opens back up,” she told Sunrise presenters David Koch and Natalie Barr. “Hopefully get my life in order a little bit. It’s going to be huge for me, that part of it.”

Because The Voice finale was recorded months earlier – the production filmed four separate versions in which each of the finalists won – Taylor Smith wasn’t actually on stage when she discovered she’d won.

“I was shocked and thrilled, I think I may still be in shock.

“I had my partner and my sister with me, and we popped party poppers, had some champagne and spent some time with family.

“I really never thought I would do anything like this and I gave it a go and it’s gone really well.”

Despite what is sure to be a busy few months ahead in the limelight, which includes touring as mentor Guy Sebastian’s support act, Taylor Smith said she will keep her job as a singing teacher.

“I love teaching, I’m going to keep doing it.”

She also said she can’t wait to get into the studio and release music that “represents me as an artist”, signalling that she will be writing original songs rather than release covers.

And in what will be welcome words to Sebastian, who has had a tough week after he back-pedalled his support for a music industry-led vaccination campaign, Taylor Smith had only nice things to say about her mentor.

She described the moment they sang together on stage as “magical”.

“We talked last night and he’s just the best. He’s really invested in me and my career and he’s the loveliest coach and mentor, I couldn’t be more lucky.”

Channel 7 has had a successful ratings run with its first season of The Voice, after it poached the long-running reality competition series from Channel 9.
