THE Simpsons predicted Donald Trump would be president 16 years ago.

Now, they animated series is poking fun at itself for being right.

In a cheeky references to their prophecy in 2000, the first The Simpsons episode to air post-election featured a chalkboard gag in the opening sequence, with a scowling Bart Simpson scrawling: “Being right sucks”.

The opening credits change for every The Simpsons episode, and creators have confirmed this one was a reference to the ‘Bart to the Future’ episode which aired in 2000.

‘The Simpsons updates its 2000 prediction of a Trump Presidency ... #TheSimpsons,’ the show tweeted.

In Bart to the Future, Lisa Simpson was elected president, taking over from President Trump.

It showed a grown-up Lisa as the incumbent, referring to “inheriting quite a budget crunch from President Trump”.

Earlier this year Simpsons creator Matt Groening told The Guardian they used Trump because he was “the most absurd placeholder joke name that we could think of”.

Dan Greaney, a long-time writer for the show, said at the time it was a “warning to America”.

He told The Hollywood Reporter: “That just seemed like the logical last stop before hitting bottom. It was pitched because it was consistent with the vision of America going insane.”
