The real story behind Lisa Wilkinson and Karl Stefanovic's bust-up on Today Show set

TODAY Show hosts Karl Stefanovic and Lisa Wilkinson have set the record straight over speculation their relationship has soured.

Lisa Wilkinson's 17 point turn

IS THERE drama on the set of The Today Show or is it just a storm in a breakfast tea cup?

Various media outlets have reported in the last week that things haven't been so rosy between hosts Lisa Wilkinson and Karl Stefanovic, with tension brewing after Wilkinson left the set in tears for 40 minutes.

Wilkinson admitted to Woman's Day she walked off to talk to producers after she and Stefanovic had differing opinions on how a particular segment should be handled.

"No one needs to worry about our relationship," she told the mag. "People have been concerned that I was upset, but this stuff happens in a dynamic news environment.

"I can assure you if I had a problem with Karl he'd be the first to know about it and vice-versa.

"We make no apology for the passion we both bring to the show."

Stefanovic says the pair have already moved on from the incident.

"We had a disagreement and, as always, we spoke about it after the show. Sorted ... and we've well and truly moved on.

"Lisa and I have a wonderful, robust relationship on and off the screen. Yes, we have arguments from time to time, but we're both passionate journalists."

A Channel Nine spokesperson told news.com.au: "There was a cranky moment but the team had been working incredibly long hours on the election and everyone was tired.

"Lisa and Karl work so closely together and they are passionate people who want the show to succeed. Anyone who can put their hand up and say they have never fought with such a close colleague and friend would be lying."

Both hosts appear to have already made light of the situation, both posting a photo of Wilkinson putting Stefanovic in a headlock on their Instagram accounts.

"Paid a little visit to @kstefanovic 's dressing room after @thetodayshow this morning," Wilkinson wrote alongside the image. "I do this every so often. Keeps him honest. Sort of..."

While Stefanovic wrote next to the same photo on his own account: "I may not be in on Monday".

Wilkinson was again the butt of the show's jokes when footage was aired this morning of a car struggling to leave the carpark, with Stefanovic and Ben Fordham telling viewers it was her trying to leave Channel Nine.

Nine News supremo Mark Calvert has been recruited to iron out the tensions, stepping in to oversee the show some mornings.

What Calvert's influence on the program will be remains to be seen with producers tight-lipped about any "shake-up plans".

One thing is for sure, breakfast TV is going to get a whole lot more interesting when Channel Ten's Wake Up is added to the mix in the coming weeks.
