Shannen Doherty has broken her silence over her bitter feud with former Charmed co-star Alyssa Milano.
Doherty and Milano starred together on the smash hit series in the 2000s for three seasons, before Doherty left the show amid swirling rumours of tension on set.
On the latest episode of her podcast, Let’s Be Clear, Doherty welcomed her other former Charmed co-star Holly Marie Combs to talk about their longstanding friendship and their time together on the WB series.
The pair knew each other before starring on Charmed as sisters, but Doherty has now alleged that newcomer Milano tried desperately to put a wedge between them; and said that her efforts ended up working like a charm.
“It was really interesting of [her] trying to pull you away from me,” she said. Combs and Doherty were close friends prior to being cast on Charmed. Combs had even lived with Doherty following her split from first husband Bryan Travis Smith.
While the threesome were filming season 2, Combs faced a traumatic health scare and the show was paused while she had a potentially cancerous tumour removed.
Doherty has now alleged that Milano and her mother actively tried to stop her from visiting Combs in hospital.
“Hospitals scared me to death,” said Doherty, who had been back and force into hospitals at the time due to her father’s ailing health. “I waited 24 hours after your surgery to go and then it wasn’t even easy for me to get in. I was like being told I couldn’t even get in. Alyssa and her mom were blocking people from seeing you and at the time you didn’t know. I remember you texted me, ‘Dude are you going to come and see me?’”
Doherty grew frustrated and upset over Combs’ message and felt guilt over the notion that her friend thought she’d aboned her.
“I also felt my anger at the situation of not being allowed to come see you and how a sort of family had swooped in,” Doherty added. “[It] caused a weird divide between the two of us that continued throughout season 2. I think I cried every single night.”
Combs then went on to share that her own difficult childhood led her to take refuge in Milano’s family when they took her in.
“I think it was pretty obvious I was raised by teenage parents and I didn’t have a big family So you’re right, when a family swooped in and tried to basically adopt me it was very seductive for me,” said the star. “I also wanted everybody to get along, I wanted the show to be successful. There were no angels, there were no demons. We all had bad days, we all had good days. We all could have behaved better at certain points but there was a lack of awareness of a bigger broader picture.”
Charmed ran for eight seasons in total, and rumours swirled about a feud for years.
At the time of her decision to walk away from the show, Doherty added fuel to the fire when she said publicly that she would miss Combs, with no mention of Milano.
“There was too much drama on the set and not enough passion for the work,” Doherty told Entertainment Tonight at the time. “You know, I’m 30 years old and I don’t have time for drama in my life anymore. To me it’s sort of whatever. I’ll miss Holly a lot and that’s really the only thing I want to clear up.”
