MAFS stars reveal secret meanings behind their tattoos

One Married At First Sight bride has revealed the unconventional meaning of a tattoo on her abdomen – and it might not be what you expect.

How do tattoos work?

We’ve seen our fair share of tatted-up brides and grooms over the years on Married At First Sight – it’s almost a prerequisite of being a contestant.

And many of this year’s participants are no exception – with both the men and women exhibiting ink that either completely covers their appendages or is a bit more subtle and discreet.

Take bride Sam, for example, who’s partnered up with Al for the experiment. Her most recent tattoo is the word “delicate” across the top of her stomach.

“When people meet me, I come across really confident … extroverted, sassy,” she told 9Entertainment.

“But inside I can be quite insecure and really sensitive.”

While her on-screen husband doesn’t appear to have any tattoos, plenty of her fellow contestants do.

Take Domenica – who has quite a few tattoos, including the year “2020” and the words “love you” as a reminder to herself “cause if you don’t love yourself no one else is gonna love you”.

But one in particular is her “most prized possession”: a jar of Vegemite on the inside of her upper left arm.

“It’s something I always go back to … It will always make me happy,” she said of her permanent tribute to the famous Aussie sandwich spread.

She’s not the only one who’s use tattoos to show some love for another human (or grocery item): Anthony has a whole sleeve of ink on one arm.

But there’s one tattoo viewers might not get a look at – the one he got, aged 18, to impress his then-girlfriend.

“I got her a butterfly tattoo for Christmas and part of it was like, ‘I’ll get one too to impress her’,” he explained.

“So I’ve got this massive dirty little wizard stapled on my left hip … sitting there randomly for 20 years.”

Bride Ella isn’t afraid of going under the needle either – she estimates she’s got “about 30 tattoos”, including of favourite animal and flower, quotes from books, daily reminders and affirmations.

“All just resonate with things to myself,” she explained.

For Mitch – whose tattoo, of a sword down his spine wrapped with roses, wasn’t the only thing viewers saw while he was on his honeymoon – he simply liked the look of the design.

Fellow groom Brent also has more than a few roses incorporated into his many tattoos – in fact, he’s practically covered in ink.

“My grandmother loved angels so that’s where it started, and I got into angels,” he said of the first designs he got on his body.

Another contestant who’s used their tattoos to pay tribute to a loved one is Olivia.

“I have a J on my wrist for a good friend that sadly passed away,” she told 9.

She got a love heart tattooed on her hip during a trip to Scotland to visit her best friend, and the words “Made in England” are inked on her foot.

But not all of them she’s thankful for: “I’ve got a really lame quote down my thighs that I hate,” she said.

“It’s like blurry and disgusting now.”
