Huge update on Netflix smash hit Adolescence after show becomes one of the platform’s biggest successes

Adolescence has become one of Netflix’s biggest shows ever, and now a surprising update on the series has been revealed.

'Adolescence' TV drama exposes global issue of teenage violence

Netflix‘s hit show Adolescence has made such an impact on the culture, it may now become more than just a limited series event.

Though it premiered less than a month ago, the U.K. series starring Stephen Graham and Owen Cooper has become Netflix’s fourth most popular English-language series of all time. Now, it’s possible that more Adolescence may be on the horizon.

Deadline reported this morning that the show is now being considered for a second season.

Plan B Entertainment, Brad Pitt’s production company behind the surprise hit, is in early talks with director Philip Barantini about what a second possible season could look like.

As for what’s in store in Season 2, Plan B co-president Dede Gardner told Deadline they’re hoping to “widen the aperture, stay true to its DNA [and] not be repetitive,” in future episodes of the Netflix hit.

Deadline also notes that the team is hoping to bring back creators Jack Thorne and co-star Graham for the next “iteration.”

The first season follows the story of Jamie Miller (played by breakout Owen Cooper), a 13-year-old boy who is arrested for the murder of one of his classmates.

With over 114 million views and counting, the show currently holds a 99 per cent score on Rotten Tomatoes with over 90 reviews from critics. DECIDER’s own Hope Sloop writes that the “compelling and disturbing” program “will no doubt go down as one of the best shows you’ll see on Netflix in 2025.”

The show has brought issues around online-provoked male violence and teens radicalised by the ‘manosphere’ to the front of the social conversation, and has been noted for its masterclass acting and its daring filmmaking approach: each hour-long episode is filmed in one single take.

“Phil’s style of doing the episodes in one take is not a gimmick. It’s very much in conversation with the subject matter,” Gardner told Deadline.

This news begs the question of what a possible second season could look like and be centred on. With a show title like Adolescence, it’s safe to assume that the show creators will tackle another heavy social topic around contemporary youth.

But will it recreate the same one-shot technique? Stay tuned for more updates about the production of a second season!
