GREY’S Anatomy star Jess Capshaw has revealed what’s in store for the show’s lesbian couple and what role Geena Davis will play on the TV drama.

THE LAST WORD …

WITH JESSICA CAPSHAW, GREY’S ANATOMY’S DR ARIZONA ROBBINS

“LAST season Arizona’s relationship with Callie (Sara Ramirez — the other half of the show’s tumultuous lesbian couple) was rocky to say the least.

Now it’s all about what to do next. They got OK because there is so much love there and they love each other so much that … well, why wouldn’t they have gotten back together?

But the beginning of this season sees them also understanding that even though it might have felt good to exorcise some demons, that there are still so many elements of their relationship that are truly broken and that they need to work on.

This season sees them dealing with things like therapy and just really figuring out if they’re going to be together how they should go about it, and if they are not going to be, how they should do that.

We see them investigating if they are going to try for a baby and use a surrogate. They go down that road of do they want to and it becomes very clear how much of a priority that is for one or both of them. (There’s an acknowledgment that it might be a band-aid). That’s the whole thing. The whole thing is whether they just continue to do that over and over.

By episode eight they reconcile with what they are going to do about going forward.

Arizona has a whole other storyline this season with her being mentored by Dr (Nicole) Herman (played by Academy Award winner Geena Davis) which has been a lot of fun.

Working with Geena … I sometimes look around and feel like pinching myself.

To have a show that has been on for 11 years is wonderful. To be on it myself for seven years is ground-breaking for me, and then to all of a sudden to get a whole new person to play with … it makes it like you’re on a whole other show. I feel like I won the Lotto.

Was it daunting to play alongside Geena? I didn’t know she was coming and I think I would have angsted it out all hiatus if I had known.

In the beginning ... she’s kind of like a practical joker so she would kind of mess with me because I have such reverence for her. She would kind of give me a sidelong glance and I would like get a bit unnerved.

I was like ‘I’m on my toes at work and I’ve been here for seven years’.

There’s a freshness and a gravity that she brings. On set she walks in a room and everyone is: “Step. Up”.

She also brings height (at 183cm tall, Davis tops Capshaw by 20cm). I’m not going to lie. I had to stand on apple boxes and she had to take off her heels a couple of times (during shooting).

We got to play drunk together, and while we were shooting she references the last time she played drunk with someone. And I’m like ‘so who was that?’

And she says ‘you know Susan (Sarandon)’ and I think, ‘Oh right … from Thelma and Louise … that’s only an iconic movie moment’. And I ask her: ‘So how am I doing?’
