Gold Logie winners reveal their picks for this year’s top TV going

The race for the Gold Logie is still tight, with Australians having their say on who should win. See what the nominees think and vote for your favourite.

Berts Logies moments

There’s been no campaigning - hard - from the reigning Gold Logie winner Tom Gleeson in the lead up to the 62nd TV Week Logies this Sunday.

The Hard Quiz host has remained true to his words that he wouldn’t promote himself, after his own Gold Logie win in 2019 and lobbying for Grant Denyer in 2018.

In fact he’d give a “pity vote” to fellow 2022 nominee Karl Stefanovic.

“Morale must be low at the Today show,” Gleeson said.

“They’re always being beaten by Sunrise in the ratings. ABC News Breakfast beats them now too. So yeah, it’s a pity vote but I want Karl to win.”

It’s a tight race - but some readers still think Gleeson should get the gong again.

Stefanovic said he wouldn’t return the favour. If he was voting - for anyone apart from himself - Hamish Blake would be his first preference.

“Obviously Hamish is the one that I would vote for, not just because I’m at Channel 9, but I just love Lego Masters so much,” Stefanovic said.

“But I don’t mind admitting that I have a massive man crush on Ray Meagher.

“I think the guy is 165 years old, but he’s still making those younger kids at Home and Away look like lazy little sods. I can’t believe it.”

Bookies favourite Blake modesty downplayed his chances.

“To be honest I think everyone on this list deserves it more than me based on pure hours worked,” he said.

“Ray has been on Home and Away since slightly after TV was invented (and is just a lovely bloke) and the others all seem to be on at least every week, with the exception of Sonia, who has somehow hosted 22 shows this year, and does it brilliantly.

“However if I had to pick one I’d go Melissa. Jumping into a running show and bringing your own voice and style to it is no easy feat and I reckon she’s done it terrifically.”

MasterChef’s Leong, however, stayed with in her own network, calling out I’m a Celebrity’s Julia Morris.

“How could I look past my own Network 10 sister and bona fide ray of sunshine, The Right and Honourable Julia Morris?” Leong said.

“Not only does she bring brightness, great humour and fun to every room she walks into, she was so kind and welcoming to me when I joined 10, and I never forget kindness.”

Morris said there was no way she could choose between this group of nominees.

“Having worked side by side with each of them for just on 75 years…I simply can’t choose,” she said. “When in doubt go with family. The delicious Melissa Leong is such a wonderful part of my Channel 10 family… so Melissa all the way.”

Meagher, who thought his golden days were long gone after his win 12 years ago, wants The Voice and Big Brother host Sonia Kruger to take home the top gong.

“Because she’s from the same stable, but she’s a lovely lady – and she works her backside off,” he said.

And Kruger would love the legendary Meagher to score a second Gold.

“He’s been on our screens in Home and Away since 1988 which is a remarkable television achievement,” she said. “As Alf would say ‘strewth, that is an impressive innings.’”

The Gold Logie nominees glammed up and gathered for a shoot for TV Week’s special Logies edition out Monday.

Award organisers have also announced a stellar line-up of Australian music greats - Jimmy Barnes, Jessica Mauboy and Tim Minchin - to perform at the Gold Coast awards gig on June 19, alongside UK pop singer Calum Scott.

Barnes will give the crowd a taste of his current Soul Deep 30 tour - celebrating the three decades anniversary of his iconic album of the same name.

While Minchin - who’s just wrapped the second series of Foxtel’s Upright - promises a unique treat for the television stars in the room and viewers at home.

Nine’s Leila McKinnon, David Campbell and Renee Bargh will cover all the sparkle of the red carpet at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Live voting for all the Most Popular awards, including the Gold Logie, is open right through until the end of the red carpet telecast. Fans can now vote for their favourites from the short-listed nominees at tvweeklogiesvote.com.

Watch The Logie Awards on Sunday, June 19, 7pm, on Nine and 9 Now.
