Game of Thrones stars: Where are they now after the show’s finale?

A year on from Game Of Thrones and the finale that divided millions of fans, who is the real winner from the cast? We take a look at what the stars have done since the show ended and what they have in store for the future.

Game of Thrones: The Best Scenes EVER

And the real winner of Game Of Thrones is … Jon Snow, with Robb Stark close behind.

One year on from the controversial final season of the television show that broke viewing records, redefined the genre and turned its stars into household names, who has kicked on? Who has taken that incredible name recognition and turned it into a glittering career — and who is struggling to break free of the shackles of such a famous role?

Of course, most of the upcoming projects have been put on hold thanks to COVID-19 but, when everything resumes, we will get to see who was born to rule … at the box office.

EMILIA CLARKE

(Daenerys Targaryen)

She was so close to the Iron Throne, only to go mad, get stabbed by her nephew-lover Jon Snow and carried away by her dragon baby. It’s a lot to follow up.

Best so far: Last Christmas, a classic rom-com with a twist.

Upcoming: Playing Nina in The Seagull by Anton Chekhov in London’s West End — and one of her co-stars is Indira Varma, better known as Ellaria Sand.

KIT HARINGTON

(Jon Snow)

Harington will have a major role in the Marvel Eternals movie, currently due out in February.

He plays Dane Whitman, who discovers he is a hero called Black Knight. That’s pretty cool in itself but there are hints Marvel has big plans for Black Knight.

Fans don’t need Rise Of Skywalker’s juicy new secrets

First, his suit of armour popped up in the background of the Tower of London in Spider-Man: Far From Home and second, Kevin Feige dropped a heavy hint that Black Knight will join the Avengers. In the comics, he has been part of the Avengers for years.

If that comes off, Harington could find himself as the new face of this billion-dollar franchise.

Best so far: Gunpowder, a TV series about Guy Fawkes.

Upcoming: Eternals.

PETER DINKLAGE

(Tyrion Lannister)

Tyrion ended up in his rightful place as Hand to King Bran — and you could say Dinklage has followed in Tyrion’s footsteps, picking up a bunch of interesting character roles.

Best so far: Voicing the Mighty Eagle in Angry Birds 2.

Upcoming: The Croods 2, I Care A Lot, The Dwarf.

LENA HEADEY

(Cersei Lannister)

Poor Cersei. When she blew up half of King’s Landing at the end of season six, it seems she blew up any further plot twists or characterisation. Her end came as a chunk of the palace fell on her. But you can’t keep someone as good as Headey down.

She has been knocking over a bunch of voice roles, including an upcoming role as the evil witch Evil-Lyn in Masters Of The Universe, where she will face off against Liam Cunningham (Ser Davos) as the loyal Duncan, Man-At-Arms.

She’s also joined a variety of former GoT alumni in voicing characters in Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.

Best so far: Big Mama in Rise Of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Upcoming: Twist, a retelling of the classic Oliver Twist, where she plays Sikes, the vicious baddie. Who else?

SOPHIE TURNER

(Sansa Stark)

Sadly her star vehicle, as Jean Grey/Dark Phoenix in the X-Men, was more of a flop than a hit. That wasn’t Sophie’s fault but it obviously made it harder to break away from Sansa.

Of course she is also preparing for her biggest role — her first child with husband Joe Jonas.

Best so far: X-Men: Dark Phoenix.

Upcoming: Survive, a TV series.

MAISIE WILLIAMS

(Arya Stark)

Arya got to sail away to discover distant lands, while we are also waiting to discover if she can grow from being the child star of GoT into something far more.

Best so far: The New Mutants. On hold again thanks to COVID-19, it promises a bloody return to the X-Men world.

Upcoming: The Owners, about a group of friends who plan a burglary that goes wrong.

NIKOLAJ-COSTER-WALDAU

(Jaime Lannister)

After going on what seemed to be a classic hero’s journey, Jaime gave us a beautiful moment (knighting Brienne) and then a silly one (dying pointlessly with Cersei).

Since then the Danish actor seems to be concentrating on European productions.

Best so far: Domino, where he played a cop seeking justice for his partner’s murder.

Upcoming: The Day We Died, a dramatisation of the 2015 terror attacks in Copenhagen.

IAIN GLEN

(Ser Jorah Marmont)

It wasn’t a nice end for Ser Jorah, not to mention it began to send Dany mad. But Glen, a character actor with a tonne of credits, has been busy since being thrown onto the GoT funeral pyre.

Best so far: The Flood, The Windermere Children.

Upcoming: The Racer, Black Beauty.

ALFIE ALLEN

(Theon Greyjoy)

He was the silly sausage who lost his gentleman’s sausage thanks to the evil Ramsay Bolton. But Theon redeemed himself by helping save Bran from the Night King in the end. Again, he has only picked up small parts so far but that could change in an instant.

Best so far: JoJo Rabbit.

Upcoming: Night Teeth, a Netflix thriller about a chauffeur whose female passengers drag him into trouble.

CONLETH HILL

(Lord Varys)

He looked so distinctive as the bald Varys that a Hill with hair is barely recognisable. The Irish actor has been busy since being burned to death by Dany’s dragons.

Best so far: Dublin Murders TV series.

Upcoming: Here Are The Young Men, about a bunch of Dublin teens looking for trouble.

LIAM CUNNINGHAM

(Ser Davos)

He did well out of Westeros and the veteran actor has kept busy, even voicing a part opposite Lena Headey in He-Man And The Masters Of The Universe.

After the success of the movie 1917, more World War I films are in the pipeline and he is set to star in one that could be a big hit.

Best so far: The Hot Zone.

Upcoming: The Last Front, about a farmer defending his village during the German invasion of 1914, often known as the “Rape of Belgium”.

Liam Cunningham played Ser Davos Seaworth.

AIDEN GILLEN

(Littlefinger)

He was one of the best villains in the series, who fans hated from the moment he betrayed Ned Stark to his death. But the genial Gillen has found a new home as a hero.

As Dr J Allen Hynek, he has been the lead of the SBS series Project Blue Book. Dr Hynek’s work was the inspiration for the 1990s classic show The X Files.

Best so far: Project Blue Book, Peaky Blinders, Bohemian Rhapsody.

Upcoming: James And Lucia, about writer James Joyce.

GWENDOLINE CHRISTIE

(Brienne of Tarth)

Her role as Captain Phasma in Star Wars ended in a fiery grave, which was a familiar fate for many of her GoT co-stars.

Gwendoline Christie as Brienne of Tarth. Could she be the next She-Hulk?

She is also being mentioned as a possible She-Hulk in the Marvel TV show of the same name, in the way Lou Ferrigno played Hulk in the 1970s TV series.

Best so far: A Midsummer Night’s Dream in the West End.

Upcoming: Personal History Of David Copperfield.

ISAAC HEMPSTEAD WRIGHT

(Bran Stark)

Much to everyone’s surprise Bran ended up on the Iron Throne. He knew more than the others and, just like Bran, Wright’s been busy studying at university. Still, he has a couple of projects on the horizon now his studies are almost finished.

Best so far: His exam results.

Upcoming: The Blue Mauritius, a crime caper about a gang trying to steal the world’s most valuable stamp.

RORY McCANN

(The Hound)

After this fan favourite’s famous scene with Arya where he busts up an entire bar because of a roast chicken, it is a mystery why he isn’t the face of a KFC advertising campaign.

He had a major role in Jumanji, which could see him return for a future sequel, given it is a computer game and nothing ever really dies.

Best so far: Jumanji: The Next Level.

Upcoming: None announced.

JEROME FLYNN

(Ser Bronn)

He was the cheeky mercenary who helped both the Lannister brothers at different times and ended up sitting pretty after all the battles. Flynn is a popular character actor and is always in demand.

Best so far: Had his gentleman’s sausage chomped by dogs in John Wick 3.

Upcoming: The Dark Tower, a TV remake of the Stephen King books that was a film flop last year.

CHARLES DANCE

(Tywin Lannister)

It’s been a few years since he was crossbowed to death on the dunny by Tyrion. Since then, Dance has been busy playing a variety of roles, from villains to heroes.

Best so far: A baddie in Godzilla: King Of The Monsters, Lord Mountbatten in The Crown.

Upcoming: A hero in The King’s Man, a prequel to the Kingsmen movies.

RICHARD DORMER

(Beric Dondarrion)

As flame sword-wielding Beric, Dormer kept coming back to life, eventually saving Arya Stark in time for her to eventually kill the Night King.

Dormer will be back with sword in hand as Sam Vimes in The Watch, a TV adaptation of legendary British writer Terry Pratchett’s beloved Night Watch series. If it’s as good as the books, it will be massive.

Best so far: Disney’s Togo, about a sled dog.

Upcoming: The Watch.

RICHARD MADDEN

(Robb Stark)

As the hero of the series Bodyguard, Madden was magnificent. Now he is poised to take an even bigger step away from the unfortunate Robb Stark and possibly kick off a series of Marvel movies as Ikaris in Eternals.

He will be one of the leaders and, if the film goes as well as the others, could become famous worldwide for this as well.

Best so far: Bodyguard.

Upcoming: Eternals.
