Excitement around the final season return saw GoT generate more than 200,000 tweets about the show in the 24 hours before it streamed globally; while the series was the number #1 trending topic in Australia — not bad considering it’s competing with the 2019 election campaign trail.

Only the rise and rise of fan favourite Jon Snow — who was finally told he’s the rightful heir to the Iron Throne — could steal focus from the power women of Westeros, in a wholly satisfying season 8 premiere of the world’s most popular TV show.

The spectacular scale of the production was best on display in the opening scenes, when the vast armies gathered by Daeneyrs Targaryen arrived at the House of Stark, in Winterfell — where they received an icy reception in more ways than one.

The meeting between mother of dragons, Dany and suspicious maiden, Sansa Stark sent social media into meltdown when the latter asked how they might feed the hordes who had arrived on her family’s doorstep — including the fire-breathing protectors of the Queen.

With withering contempt, Sansa sniffed: “what do dragons eat, anyway?” to which their mother, Dany deadpanned: “anything they want.”

In her next exchange with Tyrion Lannister, Sansa had the upper hand — questioning why he betrayed his own sister Cersei, to take Dany as his queen.

Known for his wit and wisdom, Tyrion acknowledged her smarts, noting: “many have underestimated you; most of them are dead now.”

When he says he trusts that Cersei will add her armies to the force gathering to fight The Night King, Sansa is not convinced: “I used to think you were the cleverest man alive.”

When the action moves north to King’s Landing, Euron Greyjoy makes clear he wants sexual favours from Queen Cersei if he is to lend her his golden fleet.

She resists at first, delivering one of the great feminist mantras many on social called to be replicated on T-shirts when she quipped: “you want a whore, buy one. You want a queen, earn her.”

Cut to Cersei sipping post-coital pinot and a cocksure Greyjoy boasting: “I’m going to put a prince in your belly.”

Back at Winterfell, there are more family reunions — with hugs all round for Jon and Arya, who compare swords (not a euphemism); before Jon takes a quick flight over the northern terrain on the back of one of Dany’s dragons.

Meanwhile, the youngest living Stark, wheelchair-bound Bran, inexplicably spends most of the episode sitting outside in the freezing cold courtyard, staring blankly into the chilly air.

Asked why he’s doing it, he says, blankly: “I’m waiting for a friend.”

Inside, Dany and Ser Jorah Mormont find jolly Sam Tarlywell tucked away in a quiet corner of the castle library, where he confesses to her and seeks a pardon for stealing a book or two from the Targaryen collections.

She tells him she killed his dad and brother, which is quite some get square — leaving Sam broken-hearted and in tears.

From tears to fears, with the most chilling scene coming when Tormund and Beric discover The Night King has left them a shocking reminder he lurks dangerously close.

It’s not your ordinary note, sent by a raven, but rather the severed limbs of locals in House Umber (pledged loyal to the House of Stark) and the body of a child — Ned Umber — nailed to a wall, in the shape of The Night King’s spiderlike insignia.

[Editor’s note: by comparison, I think we can finally let Berger off the hook as the worst guy in the TV universe for sending that Post-It note in Sex And The City).

Back at Winterfell, sad Sam seizes the moment to tell Jon he’s the rightful heir to the seven kingdoms of Westeros — not Dany — revealing the boy raised the bastard child of Ned Stark, is actually Aegon, the offspring of Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen.

The news sends Jon reeling — not only because of his parentage, but mostly because he has been up close and personal with the woman he now knows as his aunt.

It’s not the first incestuous pairing on the show — with Bran busting Cersei and her brother Jaime at it in the attic back in season one, episode one.

Fast forward and the action heads back outside, to where a hooded stranger rides mysteriously into the courtyard, only revealed as Jaime and he catches sight of Bran, still steadfast and sitting solemnly in his wheelchair.

Game on, Thrones fans.
