WHEN it comes to their relationship status on hit US soap Devious Maids, suffice to say Grant Show’s Spence Westmore and Dania Ramirez’s Rosie’s is ‘complicated’.

In the first two seasons, Rosie went from being the married Westmore’s maid to his lover, he divorced, they got together, it fell apart, they reconciled, then, their wedding was eclipsed when a gunman letting loose at the nuptials.

As season three plays out on our screens, there’s plenty more where that came from as they deal with the return of Ernesto (Cristián de la Fuente) — the husband Rosie thought dead.

“There will be a really cool love triangle between myself, Ernesto and ‘Meeeeester Spence’, Ramirez teases with a delicious Latino lilt.

“Now I get to have two men fighting over me. I like that.”

In person, the pair share an easy off-screen rapport, with former Melrose Place star Show the straight man to the cheeky Ramirez.

While initially Devious Maids drew attention for its Latino-heavy cast, Show says it has now eclipsed that, thanks to the wizardy of creator Marc Cherry (Desperate Housewives).

“The soap opera meets telenovela style of the show is very American and very Latin,” he says, “and right now this is the only show doing that,” Show says.

“The Latino aspect of our show is now normalised. These are not necessarily Latino characters, they are just the characters on our show who happen to be Latino.”

Ramirez cuts in: “Yeah, but we make it a little more spicy,” she says, to laughter.

Inevitably, conversation turns to whether off-screen Show and Ramirez employ maids of their own.

“I’ve had the same woman coming to my house for … God . 20 years now. And her name is Rosie ... it’s true,” Show laughs.

“She is from El Salvador. When immigrants come here and you have no family and no connections or roots here, it’s how people move forward. I mean my family was the same. My grandmother was from Scotland and she’d clean houses. When I was eight, ten years old my family would clean offices. That’s what you do in America. It’s a very American story.”

Ramirez now has help at home, but it was a different story growing up.

“I definitely also cleaned my own house for many years,” she says.

“I myself was born in the Dominican Republic and I come from a very humble background so we didn’t have maids growing up, we had to do our own cleaning, cooking ... I was cooking when I was 12.

“So when I finally started making enough money to have a maid, it’s been a privilege. The relationships that you have with the people that work for you on such an intimate level are so powerful, because it’s not like a friend that is coming to your house and visiting, it is someone that is going through your drawers. I don’t know there’s something about that that is a little more personal.

“And yes, my maid is Latino. I like the way Latin people clean my house ... probably because I like the way I clean my house.”
