DAVID Walliams has some good news for Little Britain fans.
The popular comedian won’t rule out reuniting with Matt Lucas in the future.
It is more than a decade since Little Britain shot Walliams and Lucas to worldwide fame and five years since the pair’s TV follow-up, Come Fly with Me.
Since then, Walliams has branched out into all sorts of areas. He is a judge on Britain’s Got Talent, and starred as amateur sleuth Tommy Beresford in Agatha Christie mystery series Partners in Crime.
Then there’s his success as an author with his autobiography Camp David and a range of children’s books all hitting the bestseller list.
The 45-year-old is now basking in solo fame.
“Matt has gone off and done his own thing but if he wants to do something again at some point that’s a conversation we’ll have,” Walliams tells TV guide.
“To get back together you’ve got to think what it is you want to do. Do you want to create a bit of nostalgia — doing your old stuff — or is it more interesting to move on and do something new. So we’d have to work it out.”
Walliams is back doing sketch comedy with his new, Walliams and Friend series.
Each week he is partnered with a new performer, with guests to include Joanna Lumley, Hugh Bonneville, Miranda Richardson and Sheridan Smith.
“I really wanted to go back to what I was doing in the first place (sketch comedy),” Walliams says.
“When you become successful for doing a sketch show you get all these amazing other opportunities and they’re all fantastic and enjoyable and test you in different ways — but I wanted to do something that was pure comedy and had no other aim than to make people laugh.”
Walliams knew that his new sketch show would inevitably be compared to Little Britain so he set out to make it different.
“I think having the different stars each week makes it different,” Walliams says. “It was finding people who would be fun and not too precious and not scared of failing. They’re all people I’m a fan of.
“Even though Joanna is a glamorous woman she’s very happy to make herself look stupid and ugly (on Walliams and Friend) so she was the perfect person to collaborate with.
“She had done Absolutely Fabulous but she really hadn’t done any sketch comedy so we felt we could cover new ground with her.
“You just hope you have chemistry with people. I wanted it (Walliams and Friends) to be as equal as possible, for the guest stars to have great stuff to do. I didn’t want anyone playing second fiddle to me.”
