Brooke Blurton on Bachelor and Bachelor in Paradise

A Bachelor favourite has opened up about the uncomfortable secret confrontation she had with Nick Cummins in the months following the show.

The Bachelor Episode 15 Recap: Bye Bye Brooke

Brooke Blurton has opened up about her post-show contact with Nick Cummins, revealing she never planned to make text messages between them public.

The Bachelor fan favourite rose to fame last year after being tipped to win the season but abruptly quit after making it to the top four.

Appearing on Bachelor in Paradise earlier this year Blurton revealed she had left after Cummins told her he would be picking no-one in the finale and had confusingly stayed in contact with her for months afterwards via text message.

Speaking to news.com.au, Blurton said even she was surprised by how candid she had been on Bachelor in Paradise but was glad she got it off her chest.

“I think production did really well with getting it out of me, and I think also I felt comfortable with the girls talking about that,” she said.

“It’s something that I held onto whilst the show was waiting to air and after the show was airing and then going onto Paradise. I don’t regret the decision to disclose it, it’s something that was really eating at me.”

While Bachelor fans may have lapped up Blurton’s revelations, Cummins certainly wasn’t happy about it despite her giving him a heads-up before the show aired.

“I gave him full awareness of what was happening when I knew (it was going to air),” Blurton said, but Cummins’ response “wasn’t really supportive”.

“He was kind of like questioning my intent … it was bit of an uncomfortable conversation really,” she said.

“I think he was bit taken aback from it, I think he had just gotten out of the media and obviously it felt like I was bringing him back into the spotlight but that wasn’t my intention.

“It was more that I needed to get something off my chest and unfortunately that involved him, and that’s unfortunately something that he has to live with and I have to live with.”

In an interview with Stellar magazine in June, Cummins said while he had no regrets about The Bachelor he had struggled in the intense bubble of reality TV.

“When I was in the deepest, darkest times during the show, I was thinking, ‘I don’t want to be here’,” he told the magazine.

“It’s a tough place to be in mentally.”

Blurton also made waves on Bachelor in Paradise for her date with Alex Nation, which was heavily promoted by Ten.

The reality star told news.com.au she had been worried about how her sexuality would be treated by the show, which has been accused of queerbaiting in the past.

“I was just concerned about being put in this box again because I had expressed I’d been in same-sex relationships and that’s not what I’m all about,” Blurton said.

“I’m not a show pony and, ‘Hey look at me I’m bisexual,’ it’s more like I’ve had relationships with women and males and either-either I don’t see any difference.”

Blurton felt her date and kiss with Nation was “really played up” and hadn’t been as intense as had been portrayed on TV.

“If I’m being completely honest I was a little bit disappointed with how it came across because I was more curious around getting to know Alex Nation rather than just focused on her,” Blurton said.

“I was probably just as curious to get to know everyone just the same as her.”

Blurton, who is now happily in a relationship with boyfriend Nick Power, hasn’t watched much of this year’s season of The Bachelor, probably because she’s been keeping busy with work.

“I haven’t really watched the season, Nick has definitely watched it because he resonates with Matt because he’s a bit of a nerd himself,” Blurton said.

“It’s really nice to see a normal dorky kind of smart guy on those shows rather than someone — obviously Matt is quite good looking — but I think previous Bachelors just have been all muscle and looks, not a lot of personality.”

It’s a personal cause for Blurton, as her mother took her own life when the reality star was just 11.

“After working in mental health you understand the impact of being educated on the signs and symptoms,” Blurton said.

“I think now being much more educated and a lot older than when I lost my mum I know and have that awareness around mental health, and substance abuse and why people struggle.”
