Andy Lee locks down as host of Channel 10’s new game show, The Cube, airing in 2021

It’s a huge hit in the UK, now Channel 10 are bringing The Cube to Aussie audiences with funnyman Andy Lee to host.

One half of Australia’s favourite comedy duo Hamish and Andy will fly solo as the new host of Channel 10 game show The Cube Australia, set to premiere on the network next year.

Andy Lee has signed to front the UK program, where contestants are placed in a small, enclosed Perspex cube, where they must take on deceivingly simple tasks.

From throwing and catching, estimating to balancing, memorising to reacting, contestants have nowhere to go and nowhere to hide once inside The Cube.

Relieved he’s hosting from outside the box, Lee said: “Things get tense with me and my mates when we play skill games to determine who’s going to get the next round of beers at the pub, imagine doing it for a quarter of million dollars. I can’t wait!”

Daniel Monaghan, head of programming at 10 ViacomCBS, said: “Andy Lee is one of the most popular and talented comedians in Australia, and we are thrilled he will host this brilliant series.

“The Cube has been a huge success in the UK for years, and to bring this edge-of-your-seat game show to Australia for a local prime time version, with Andy Lee no less, is a fantastic addition to our 2021 schedule.”

Lee will also serve as an executive producer on the program, giving him more buy in to the show’s success.

Network 10 has struggled to make its quiz and game show formats stick with viewers, with Family Feud and Ellen DeGeneres’ Game Of Games all tested with local audiences and failing to rate.

The last UK experiment was Pointless, hosted by Mark Humphries and Dr Andrew Rochford last year, which proved popular as a concept on ABC but did not connect with 10 viewers.

It was replaced by Celebrity Name Game, presented by Grant Denyer, but proved another COVID casualty and was pulled from air in May this year.

The Cube Australia is an ITV Studios production for Network 10.
