As transgender women continue to break barriers in the modelling industry, Sydney-based model Riley Minford has added her own milestone to the movement — making her debut at Miami Swim Week.
Walking for Oh Polly at the prestigious event at the weekend, Minford called the moment a dream come true.
“I was absolutely terrified,” she told Confidential.
“But I got on that runway and ate it up.”
The 28-year-old model’s breakthrough comes amid a wave of growing inclusivity in fashion, following last year’s historical moment when Valentina Sampaio and Alex Consani became the first transgender women to walk the Victoria Secret runway.
“Since I was a little boy I’ve been stealing mum’s shoes from the closet and walking around the house like it was my runway,” Minford said.
“Now being able to walk one of the most iconic runways in the world I just could not be more grateful for this experience and the acceptance in the modelling industry.”
Minford who claimed to have felt like “an Australian baddie” could not be more “proud” to represent her country on the global stage.
“It felt so special being flown across the world to walk and I hope I did my duty.”
Fellow Aussie model Evie Maree McClelland also hit the Miami runway, though her time was unexpectedly cut short after an injury left her in a boot.
Originally scheduled to walk for two more days, McClelland is now cheering from the sidelines.
“That’s a wrap for me at Swim Week. See you next year,” she wrote on Instagram.
