The hottest young star on the planet will jet to Australia this week for the first time.

Model, actress, activist and ‘"It" girl’ Zendaya is heading to Sydney to attend the hotly anticipated GQ Men of the Year Awards where she will be announced as Woman of the Year.

GQ Australia editor Michael Christensen said the self-assured and self-aware 23-year-old deserved the award thanks to a hugely successful past 12 months.

“I don’t think anyone has had a bigger year than Zendaya,” Christensen told The Sunday Telegraph.

“There has been a coming of age with her. She starred in Spider-man: Far From Home and has also been the star of the show Euphoria. This year is her year so it is amazing to have someone like her as our Woman of the Year. She is not just an actress, she is keen to make sure she has a huge following and that she is a role model to the younger generations.”

Christensen said he hoped her attendance would bring some buzz to the event, which is going to be attended by Sydney’s hottest stars including Pia Miller, David Pocock, Baz Luhrman and Dylan Alcott.

“At every awards ceremony Zendaya has been at she has been the main event and everyone is talking about her,” he said.

“And I think that is not only because she is a great actress, but she does a lot more than she necessarily needs to do.

“She is outspoken with her political views, she really has a thought process about what she says and does and is a role model to the younger generations.”

While last year’s 20th anniversary ceremony paged homage to the past, Zendaya’s attendance is about celebrating future stars.

“Last year was our 20th anniversary so it had a retrospective feel to it, this year we are elevating and championing the younger generations and the next generations,” Christensen said.

“The future looks bright and she really brings that element to it.

The GQ Men of the Year Awards presented by Audi will be held on Thursday in the Grand Ballroom at the Hyatt Regency in Sydney.

The event will be hosted by News Prestige Editorial Director Edwina McCann and GQ Australia editor Michael Christensen and hosted by Joel Creasey.

17 awards will be presented that recognise and honour extraordinary men and women who lead by example, striving for positive change, and achieving great success in their chosen field
