BULLIED her entire school life and blind in her left eye, Elice Craig is not your typical Miss World contestant.
But the remarkable Western Sydney beauty is on a mission to change people’s view and prove to the world that beauty comes in all forms.
Craig, 20, competed in the NSW preliminary final at Macarthur Square Shopping Centre and was one of 12 girls to go through to the state finals, which will be held in July.
A total of 40 girls will compete then and the top eight will go on to the national competition.
“Going blind at the age of seven has made me who I am today,” Craig said.
“It became my purpose in life. I want to inspire other young women to be comfortable in their own skin. ”
Craig was born with a cyst on her left eye and was forced to undergo numerous surgeries as a child in an attempt to fix it.
“Each time it got worse and eventually a scar grew over my pupil which is why it looks blue,” the corporate secretary said.
Her unusual-looking eye meant years of bullying at school.
“I didn’t like what I saw and neither did other people. It was really affecting me mentally and I had anxiety about looking other people in the eyes,” she said.
“I don’t know why I wanted to fit in so badly. But it is better to stand out and that’s what I have learnt and I want to share that with other people.”
As yet her eye has not been brought up in the competition but she is sure it will be discussed in the state finals.
Meanwhile she hopes to use the competition to help her charities.
