Actor Sam Corlett has detailed the extreme body transformation he went through for his latest role.

The Vikings: Valhalla star shed 26kg to prepare for new Australian film, He Ain’t Heavy, in which he plays a meth addict.

“I didn’t eat at all. I had one meal a day for four months and tried to get 20 to 30,000 steps a day,” Corlett told Confidential.

“One meal, (I) went from 92 (kg) to 66 and that gifted me structure. I knew if I ticked that off each day I was happy. And also it gave me acute awareness or sensitivity to all the feelings that I had.

“I was listening to a lot of yogi books and stuff like that, it was a cleanse.”

It wasn’t losing the weight that was hard but getting back to his pre-filming healthy eating habits.

“Dysmorphia afterwards for sure, I struggled coming back to normal,” he said.

“Doing it, I just didn’t want to look back and be like, ‘f..., I wish I went harder’.

“And so I just really went for it during it and then afterwards it was hard.”

“My diet before was training for Vikings and so I had to find a completely new normal and my stomach was used to consuming that much food.

“It took a while to come back to a healthy body.”

He Ain’t Heavy is based on writer director David Vincent Smith’s personal story of his brother’s battle with drug addiction.

Corlett plays the character of Max to Leila George as his on-screen sister Jade, and Greta Scacchi as their mum Bev.

Corlett related to the story due to his own family history and found the experience cathartic.

The film is, well, heavy.

“It definitely mirrored my mum’s relationship with my uncle, who ended up on the streets,” he said.
