Don’t confuse Tilly Whitfeld for an influencer.
One of the more prominent contestants on social media from the latest season of Big Brother, the 21-year-old has let rip at the fake world of Instagram.
“People are over the fake stuff,” Whitfeld, who is studying a double degree in communications, advertising and media, told Confidential.
“I say it how it is in my captions and how I reply and engage with my followers. People don’t want to just see pretty girls anymore.
“They want to see people with personalities. We are going below the surface now. I think people are attracted to my page because I say it how it is.”
Whitfeld had just under 6000 Instagram followers at the start of the series and is now up to nearly 80,000. Her account has blown up over recent days with news sites in the US telling her story after Whitfeld went viral with a Tik Tok DIY Freckle Hack that gave her scarring and vision loss.
Whitfield shared graphic images of the disaster, writing: “This is the result of attempting to remove scarring I inflicted on myself trying to replicate an at home beauty procedure I saw on a tik tok video 2 months before big brother.
“Who bloody else would manage to do such a thing. Please please don’t try any “DIY” or “at home” beauty procedures I ended up in hospital with temporary loss of vision in my eye due to swelling and was very sick from the infection, not to mention my face was somewhat unrecognisable. Leave it to the professionals.”
She was last night voted out of the competition, saying she hopes either Marley Biyendolo or Sarah-Jane Adams win the reality series 2021.
It is no secret that many reality stars use the platform of television to embark on a career in social media and influencing, promoting products for potentially large sums of cash.
“Influencer is a disgusting term,” she said. “The fact that someone like Kim Kardashian, who photoshops her photographs, is influencing young girls is horrific so I hope that I can do the complete opposite. I don’t want to influence people, I want to inspire them.”
As for milking her 15 minutes, Whitfeld said she is focusing on her university studies.
“I went on that show not for any of this extra stuff, I went on there to earn money for my family, who struggled during Covid,” she said. “I am not going to be that person who goes and promotes hair products and stuff. It is just not me, it is embarrassing.”
