Halloween used to cause barely a bite into the hospitality calendar but it’s now become a marque event for many bars and restaurants across the city.
Last year, Darlinghurst Great Gatsby-inspired bar The Cat’s Meow hosted their first Halloween Party. Owner Henri Azzi believes the event, which was themed after the movie Eyes White Shut, put them on the map as a bar and they’ve since held events with raunchy lingerie brand Honey Birdette.
“For us, Halloween is more popular than any other event,” owner Henri Azzi said. “We are on Oxford street so here people love a dress up. But more than that, they want an experience.”
This year, the secret-society bar is hosting a medieval themed party and spending up to $10,000 on entertainment including smoke machines and a performance by band UltraViolet.
Hostess Clara Fable said this year’s party will be ever bigger than last year’s.
“This event is more of a celebration. Not just for Halloween, but, for post lockdown.”
They aren’t the only ones getting into the spooky spirit.
Iiko Mazesoba, which serves speciality ramen in Darling Square, has a black and orange inspired menu which includes their black housemate noodles which is coloured by activated coconut charcoal powder.
