Sunrise has notched up its 19th year as the number one show in the important breakfast timeslot.
Recent reports suggested the gap was closing between Seven Sunrise and rival Today on Nine.
But Confidential can confirm the popular Sunrise is well ahead, and has scored a boost thanks to Seven’s broadcast of the Commonwealth Games.
It has so far won every week (25 weeks) of this year’s official ratings calendar of 40 weeks nationally and across the five capital cities.
Last week’s average audience for Sunrise sat around 230,000 viewers in the five city metro markets, well ahead of Today at 185,000. It represented a 45,000 difference in viewers. Across the past five weeks, the difference has hovered on average anywhere between 7,000 and 63,000 (last week).
OzTAM ratings figures show that so far in 2022, the Sunrise national daily audience is 397,000 compared to 303,000 on Nine’s Today show, ABC News Breakfast at 280,000 and 24,000 on 10 News First: Breakfast.
That national figure represents the average audience at any one point, although executives say the show reaches more than one million people daily as viewers tune in at different points across the several hour broadcast.
“We are proud that more than 1.01 million people start with Sunrise every morning across Australia, and we never take it for granted,” Seven Network Director of Morning Television Sarah Stinson said. “As the world bounces back from the past few years, Australians continue to turn to Kochie, Nat and the team for breaking news, a sense of community and the light and laughs we all need to start the day feeling great and well informed.”
Sunrise of course had a shake-up when Sam Armytage left her post in 2021, replaced by much loved presenter Natalie Barr.
David Koch also co-hosts with Edwina Bartholomew returning from maternity leave this month, with Sam Mac on weather and Mark Beretta doing sport.
