You may not know her name but you’ve certainly seen her kick arse.
Ky Furneaux, who has been dubbed the real life Wonder Woman, is one of Australia’s premiere stunt doubles, fight co-ordinators and survivalists.
She was Sharon Stone’s stunt double in the movie Catwoman, doubled as Jennifer Garner in Elektra and appeared for close friend Jaimie Alexander in Thor.
But when it comes to the cream of the crop, Furneaux tells Confidential she loves working with fellow Australians Chris Hemsworth and Hugh Jackman.
“I worked with Hugh for three months on X-men and he is a real gentleman,” she said.
“He was so fun to work with and knew everyone’s names on set.”
She adds Hemsworth was the same: “He’s a great fighter. It’s why he’s so good in those movies.”
While Furneaux wouldn’t name names, she said the more difficult actors to work with were the ones who don’t take her work seriously.
“The actors who don’t think a fight sequence is important to their character or don’t care about the fights look like, they are the hardest,” she said.
It’s a remarkable career for someone who broke their back in a horrific car accident at 19 and was told she would never be physical again.
While Furneaux jokes that you don’t go into stunt work looking for glory, and has always happy to be behind the scenes, she’s recently put herself front and centre to try and inspire others.
In her new book, Girls’ Own Survival Guide, Furneaux wants to teach girls how to tune out the “you can’t” voices and reach for the stars.
She has also just appeared on the popular National Geographic series Naked and Afraid and became the only woman to spend time alone in the Amazon.
“It’s the most challenging thing I’ve ever done,” she said.
