SAM Dastyari might have spruiked his new show as “outrageous”, but last night’s debut suggests he’s still stuck in pollie spin mode if he thinks that’s an accurate descriptor.
The former Labor senator’s new talk show Disgrace premiered at 8.30pm on Ten last night — and despite the hype it was less edgy than the average episode of Sunrise.

The show has a similar format to The Project and featured guest panellists debating the “disgraces” of the week that were making the “national outrage machine tick”.
“Disgraces” covered included former Guardians Of The Galaxy director James Gunn, who was recently fired by Disney for paedophile jokes he’d made on Twitter 10 years ago, and Brisbane’s “poo jogger” who lost his job after he was caught defecating in public. While there were a few funny moments — including the opening skit where a security guard can’t recognise Dastyari until he refers to his “Shanghai Sam” scandal, most of the show lacks the controversy promised.
And given the “poo jogger” story broke in early June and the Gunn firing has already been widely debated, a bulk of the panel discussion felt a lot like recycled news. Dastyari made reference to his own fall from grace after being embroiled in a Chinese business donations scandal in 2017. There were some interesting moments but overall, while watchable, the show did not do enough to differentiate itself from other panel talk shows.
