AUSSIE actor Nicole Kidman has thanked Hollywood for finally recognising that female actors can have a career in the industry after 40, saying that not long ago women her age would have been “washed up” at her stage of life.

In a departure from the #metoo and #timesup dialogue that have dominated the awards season, Kidman, who accepted the gong for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Miniseries or Television Movie for her performance in Big Little Lies, used her speech as an opportunity to thank older female “trailblazers” in the industry such as Susan Sarandon, Meryl Streep, Jane Fonda and Judi Dench.

“How wonderful it is that our careers today can go beyond 40 years old, because 20 years ago we were pretty washed up by this stage in our lives,” Kidman, 50, said.

“That’s not the case now. I just beg that the industry stays behind us, because our stories are finally being told.”

Radiant in head-to-toe sequins and over the moon with her win, you would never have known that Kidman was feeling under the weather though.

“I have the flu and I’m playing a pretty out there, raw character right now so I’m having a little trouble shedding it, but I’m here and I’m incredibly grateful,” she said.

In yet another big night for Big Little Lies, Kidman’s co-star and on-screen husband Alexander Skarsgard also took home a SAG.

Fellow Australian Yael Stone also debuted her baby bump on the carpet. Stone, who along with her Orange Is the New Black cast members was nominated for best comedy ensemble, is expecting her first child with partner Jack Manning Bancroft.

Unfortunately Stone and crew lost the award to Veep.

Another big winner on the night was Gary Oldman, who was recognised by his peers in the best lead actor category for his take on Winston Churchill in The Darkest Hour.

Oldman stars alongside Ben Mendelsohn in the film, but named Geoffrey Rush (who earlier missed out on an award for his work in the Einstein miniseries) as an acting inspiration. Kristen Bellwas the show’s inaugural host and in keeping with the empowerment of women theme, the producers of the awards ceremony featured an all-female roster of presenters across all categories.
