Murray Bartlett is doing his best to keep it cool, which isn’t necessarily easy given the global fame he’s achieved off the back of starring on hit TV series, White Lotus.

The accolades have flowed steadily since the series premiered and Bartlett brought it home on Wednesday night in being named GQ Man of the Year.

“It is a bit surreal but I am starting to get used to the surreal aspect of it,” Bartlett told The Daily Telegraph.

“I am trying to be relaxed about it and not freak out about it when I meet my heroes and I think I am doing a decent job of it.”

“I feel fortunate that this stuff is happening at this point in my life because I feel like I’ve got a better perspective on myself and on life and on the industry,” the 51-year-old said.

“I am just loving it up. I think because I am a little older I can just really be in the moment rather than thinking what is next or what is this the beginning of. I am getting opportunities and choices that I haven’t had before and that is so much fun. I am super excited and ready, and less worried and fearful than I was as a younger person.”

A total of 17 awards were handed out at the GQ Men of the Year Awards in association with Boss at Crown Sydney, which did not disappoint in the VIP stakes.

PM Anthony Albanese was among those suiting up for the annual soiree, the first time the event has been held in-person for several years due to the pandemic.

“It is good fun and it caps off what has been a pretty extraordinary year,” Mr Albanese said.

“It is a good thing ... that it is happening in person too. It is good that GQ celebrates what is good about men’s health and issues facing men. We need to talk about things as well, not just physical health but mental health and GQ plays an important role in that.”

The Prime Minister, who took home the coveted Politician of the Year Award, and his partner were among a long list of big names on the red carpet, including Elvis starlet Olivia DeJonge, Australian of the Year Dylan Alcott and Aussie Stranger Things star Dacre Montgomery.

Accepting the Global Icon award, Russell Crowe said: “I feel there has been a lot of genuine and heartfelt speeches on this stage tonight and I just want to let you know that that shit stops now. Ladies and gentleman, it is an honour and a privilege and quite frankly a massive inconvenience to be here tonight. So in that regard, I would like to thank, f**k it man, everyone I have ever met. I want to thank all of the people I haven’t me too, why leave them out?”

The 58-year-old continued: “I mean this award means a lot, it means that Hugh Jackman was obviously busy. It means that GQ couldn’t afford the Hemsworth’s and it actually means I must be getting f***ing old. Look, I am trying to be self-deprecating here but it is not really my area of expertise.”

Solo Artist of the Year winner FISHER had the audience in stitches with his expletive ridden speech as he dropped countless F-bombs.

“I didn’t know the PM was here, I thought it was still Julia Gillard,” he joked before thanking his wife, Chloe.

“I want to thank my lovely wife. Thank you for letting me be me because I know I can be a pest most of the time. This thing (award trophy) is really heavy, I will be using it as a f***ing dumbbell.”

It was a roll call of big names frocking and suiting up for the occasion. Among the guests were Melanie Jarnson, Ian Thorpe, The Inspired Unemployed’s Jack Steele and Matty Ford, Mia Healey,Tim Minchin, Sophia Forrest, Josh Upshaw, Brodie Townsend, Pip Edwards and James Majoos. Basketballer Isaac Humphries walked the carpet with sister, Claudia.

He made international headlines earlier this month after coming out as gay.

“It has been overwhelming, very positive and full on but it is all worth it, I get to be myself now and help others in the process,” he said.

“As an athlete, we don’t have the luxury of doing anything quietly. If I stayed closeted and played on a team, then I’d fear it leaking. The fear is no longer there ... I can be open and myself.”

Singer Vance Joy attended with partner of three years, Selen Us, revealing the pair are engaged.

“She looks amazing,” he said, adding of wedding plans: “We are still planning it but it shouldn’t be too far away.”

Rugby League star Nicho Hynes suited up for the night, as did Stranger Things star Dacre Montgomery, Breakthrough Musician of the Year Budjerah and Model of the Year Nathan McGuire.

Heartbreak High heart-throb Josh Heuston was named GQ’s Breakthrough Actor of the Year. Wearing an archive Boss suit with a deep V cut, he was tight-lipped about future projects planned for 2023. He will be based in Budapest, though, and potentially Los Angeles down the track.

“All my focus is on acting now,” Heuston said.

Olympic champion Harry Garside attended with his partner, Ashley Ruscoe. He opted for a skirt-suit combo.

GQ Australia editor-in-chief Jake Millar said GQ had been championing local talent since its launch in Australia more than two decades ago.

“In the years since, that has become a defining purpose for the brand ... Because the truth is, we have so much fantastic talent across the country.’’
