Rugby league star Marty Taupau is officially a Samoan chief after his summer break.
The former Manly player, who is now with the Broncos, received the title of Matai of the village of Salua Manono when he and wife Michelle visited over the Christmas break.
“Receiving my Matai title is an honour that goes beyond words,” Taupau told Confidential.
“It is about representing my ancestors, my family and carrying on our Samoan traditions.
“Having my wife and family with me made it even more powerful.
“As an NRL player and leader in the Pacifika community, this responsibility reminds me to keep giving back, stay grounded in my roots, and show our younger generation the value of service, respect and unity.”
To receive the title, Taupau, 34, took part in a Saofa’i ceremony, the process of which a new chief is recognised in Samoan society.
There was also an ‘Ava Ceremony, or serving of traditional Samoan drink, kava, the ritual symbolising ongoing connection with ancestors.
Taupau wore traditional attire while a celebratory feast (to’ona’i) was held afterwards.
