HE’S more used to being in the water than on the sand but this is the new Mick Fanning — relaxed and retired.
The Penrith-born three-time ASP World Tour champion surfed the first two events of this season then retired in April after coming runner-up at Bells Beach in Victoria.
It was the site of his first victory as a teenager when he was a wildcard entry in 2001.
The 37-year-old was in a reflective mood during a stunning photo shoot for GQ Australia’s GQ Style 2018 edition, which is out today.
In the magazine, Fanning reveals that since his split with wife Karissa Dalton in 2016, his “soulmate” has been his belgian shepherd cross labrador dog.
Fanning also shares his “10 Commandments” for a happy life.
Among them are being humble, having great friendships, being open minded, doing what you love and having respect for the planet.
The shark-punching former pro surfer has been working with conservation group Wild Ark, most recently in the Alaskan wilderness.
But right here is home.
“Australia is heaven on Earth,” Fanning tells GQ Style.
“Home should be a place where you feel at peace with yourself and can recharge.”
