Jackson Garlick on his court appearance over an alleged traffic offence

Reality TV star Jackson Garlick has gone from staring on The Bachelorette to “bush lawyer”, cross examining a 20-year veteran of the NSW Police Highway Patrol in court.

And the 25-year-old was successful, having his charge of illegal motorbike riding dismissed by a magistrate.

Garlick’s entire family – including South Sydney legend Sean Garlick – were in court on Monday supporting him as he faced Waverley Local Court on one count of “not turn right from multi-lane road from right lane”.

The offence comes with a fine of $262 and two demerit points.

Sunday Confidential can reveal the court heard Garlick – who also plays in the NRL – was riding his 2013 Black Yamaha motorcycle during the Easter long weekend in April earlier this year when a policeman conducting stationary random breath tests on Campbell Parade in Bondi in Sydney’s eastern suburbs pulled him over for allegedly turning right from Sandridge St on to Campbell Pde from the left-hand turn lane.

Police body cam footage was shown to the court, showing Garlick being pulled over.

Magistrate Grogin said it was a “brave call” when Garlick told the court he did not want to view the police body worn camera prior to it being played in the court.

When questioned about his right-hand turn, Garlick – who represents the 3rd generation of the Garlick family working at Garlo’s Pies – explained to the officer that he was lane filtering.

The officer then told Garlick that lane filtering does not apply for turns.

“Right lane turns right, left turn turns left. For people who have forgotten the road rules, they put two big white arrows there many years ago” the court heard.

Garlick cross examined the Highway patrol officer as well as tendering his own photographic evidence in court.

The matter was stood down for a short time as Garlick was asked by Magistrate Grogin if he had read the legislation, and reminded him that the legislation is not necessarily what he has been told by other people.

Despite this, the charge against Garlick was dismissed after Magistrate Grogin could not be satisfied beyond reasonable doubt that Mr Garlick had turned from lane one.

Outside court Garlick said that he only spent a short amount of time preparing for his case and credited his father, an ex NSW Policeman for assisting him and giving him advice.

Despite his success, Garlick said that he wouldn’t want to assist any of his mates with any of their legal woes if they had potential jail time involved, but wouldn’t be against assisting minor traffic infringements.

“I’m just happy that I got away without a fine and without demerit points. Justice has been served and I’m really happy.”
