REALITY star Lisa Oldfield was self-medicating with prescription drugs and more than a bottle of wine a night when she hit rock bottom. Her husband David and parents had enough and had to do something about it.

REALITY star Lisa Oldfield was self-medicating with prescription drugs and more than a bottle of wine a night when she hit rock bottom.

Oldfield was admitted to Mosman Private Hospital in early January after her husband and parents intervened.

The Real Housewife told Confidential she didn’t realise she was treating her anxiety, stemming from a sexual assault in 2016, with booze and pills.

“I was suffering from anxiety but I didn’t realise,” Oldfield said. “It was confronting when my family said I needed to go here (to rehab). I felt like a failure. My parents, who I adore and I have always sought their approval, for them to say I needed help, it felt awful.”

Finding the deep demons that were causing her to self-medicate helped Oldfield deal with her issues.

“When I went to Mosman Private and they told me I am not an alcoholic, I am suffering from PTSD from my assault. It was such a relief for me. David had been really hard on me, he had been telling me I was an alcoholic, telling my sons that ‘Mummy is an alcoholic’ and to be told by health professionals that I wasn’t was such a relief.”

Oldfield said she felt lost for two years following the assault in the back seat of a taxi, where she fell asleep only to wake and find the driver had pulled over to the side of the road and climbed on top of her.

“I never thought I would be the old Lisa again,” she said.

“Before that attack I jumped out of bed every day. For the past two years I have felt like a fraud.”

The mother of two said that after a stint in rehab, then her time in the South African bush with I’m A Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here! she felt she was back to her old self.

“Life is good again and I can’t believe that I was lying to myself for so long,” Oldfield said. “I feel strong; I feel happy in my (family) relationships.”
