Radio hosts criticise Kyle Sandilands after he failed to show at award’s night

KYLE Sandilands was the butt of all jokes at the Australian Commercial Radio Awards, copping a brutal grilling from his peers after a last minute no-show at the industry’s night of nights. These are the jokes they made.

KYLE Sandilands was the butt of all jokes at the Australian Commercial Radio Awards, copping a brutal grilling from his peers after a last minute no-show at the industry’s night of nights.

While his Kyle and Jackie O co-star Jackie Henderson at least gave 24 hours notice with her cancellation, Sandilands withdrew a few hours before the red carpet kick-off at the Melbourne Convention Centre on Saturday night.

And you could say it was a bloodbath in responses as the pair were named Best On Air Team for their KIIS FM breakfast show.

“Kyle Sandilands was supposed to be with us tonight … but he literally advised us around lunchtime that he wasn’t coming,” comedian host Chris Taylor told the industry crowd.

“So I guess Kyle treats the ACRAs a bit like he treats his own show — he never really feels all that obliged to show up.”

Fellow Chaser comedian Andrew Hansen continued as they opened the show: “It’s been a very busy year for Kyle — not just on radio, but also on TV with his Channel 10 pilot Trial by Kyle … a show where the rhyme in the title was the most creatively ambitious thing in it”.

“So Kyle’s not here,” Taylor said. “ Which is great news for the rest of us.”

But it was Sandilands’ station mates Jason ‘Jase’ Hawkins and Polly ‘PJ’ Harding of the Melbourne KIIS breakfast show who dealt perhaps the lowest blow.

Trying to make light of Sandilands’ absence, they only made it all the worse when they walked on stage to present an award pushing a hospital trolley.

A portly figure lay underneath a white sheet on the stretcher with the pair mocking Sandilands regular “sick” days.

“If old mate carks it, we’re f---ked,” PJ said before Jase pretended to make a call on Sandilands’ behalf to his mate John, presumably former nightclub identity John Ibrahim.

“Kyle, John wants to know how many you want for the weekend,” Jase said to the man on the stretcher.
