A top Channel 7 crime reporter is set to plead guilty to a drug possession charge later this month after he was allegedly busted with two bags of cocaine on the night of the network’s Christmas drinks.

Peter Fegan, who has previously been linked romantically to Sunrise star Samantha Armytage, was arrested by NSW Police about 11.30pm on December 11, a short distance from Seven’s Martin Place studios on Macquarie St in the Sydney CBD.

The 38-year-old police reporter was believed to have attended Seven’s newsroom Christmas drinks earlier in the night and was allegedly en route to another venue when he was approached by police.

It’s understood he was alone at the time.

Fegan this week declined to comment, however sources close to the reporter said he was “shattered” and intended on pleading guilty when he faced court on January 27.

He has been on leave since the incident.

“He is going to turn up and take his punishment,” a network source said.

“He is understandably shattered about it all and will never touch (cocaine) again.”

NSW Police this week confirmed an arrest, stating: “A 38-year-old man was stopped in Macquarie St about 11.45pm on Friday, 11 December, 2020 and searched, with two bags alleged to contain cocaine found in his possession. The man has been issued a Field Court Attendance Notice (CAN) for drug possession.”

Fegan is one of the rising stars of the Seven reporting team and one of the more popular figures in the newsroom.

He briefly became a headline himself in 2016 when it was reported he was dating Armytage prior to her current relationship with now-husband Richard Lavender.

Neither Fegan or Armytage ever officially confirmed the reports.

Contacted for comment on Friday, Seven news boss Jason Morrison told Confidential: “Peter was stopped by police some time after he left a dinner to head home. He was charged soon after. He made us aware of what happened and was then immediately suspended from all duties.”
