Sydney’s Sutherland Shire will serve as the “Australian wilderness” in Charlize Theron’s latest film project.
First images of the Academy Award winner on set of Apex show Theron kayaking in a river on the fringes of the Royal National Park.
Theron, 49, was photographed arriving at Sydney International Airport on January 27 and has spent the past few weeks in pre-production.
She is understood to be staying in a private home as she is based here for a few months.
Locals were notified of filming in a letterbox drop last month, with scenes to be shot over the coming weeks.
Apex will also star Taron Egerton, of Rocketman fame, and Australian actor Eric Bana.
On set this week, Theron was seen getting touch ups from a hair and makeup artist.
She is playing the lead character of Sasha in the Netflix movie, and also has a producer credit for the project about “a grieving woman (Sasha) seeks solace in the wilderness, only to find herself ensnared in a deadly game of cat and mouse with a serial killer”.
The film is being directed by Baltasar Kormakur from a script written by Jeremy Robbins.
“I couldn’t be more excited to start production on Apex,” Kormakur has told Netflix’s Tudum.
“Working in the rugged, beautiful terrains of Australia with three of the world’s most talented, dedicated actors in Charlize Theron, Taron Egerton, and Eric Bana is such a joy — even as I put them through the gauntlet in this unique survivor story.”
He continued: “For a film like Apex — where the elements and the terrain are characters that loom just as large as the movie stars battling in it — no other country in the world could have taken the place of Australia as our primary location.”
Theron meanwhile is one of Hollywood’s biggest name stars. She won her Best Actress Academy Award for her gritty performance in 2004 film, Monster.
