Former NRL player turned radio host and commentator Mark Geyer has a new home with 2GB announcing he will be joining the radio station.
A statement on the station’s website on Wednesday said: “The NSW and Australian representative, and 1991 premiership winner with Penrith, will feature weekly with The Continuous Call Team and Wide World of Sports programs and also contribute each weekday on 2GB’s new drivetime program, Sydney Now with Clinton Maynard.”
Geyer was sacked from the Triple M breakfast show, with this masthead breaking the news in November last year. With his career in limbo, Triple M faced much backlash for axing the high profile former footballer turned commentator.
The State of Origin legend said in a statement: “I’m pumped to be joining the team at 2GB and very grateful for the opportunity.
“Some of the biggest names in radio have gone through those 2GB corridors, so it’s humbling to be a part of such an established team. Let’s rip in!”
Geyer, who was announced as the station’s newest signing live on-air by Ben Fordham, said he was “excited” to join the top-rated Sydney station.
The former NRL star will contribute weekday afternoons with new drive host Clinton Maynard after the 5.30pm news, as well as appear on Wide World of Sports and the Continuous Call Team.
“Honestly, I’m really excited. It’s kind of like a new beginning for me,” Geyer told Fordham.
“You’re going to see my face around this building a lot.”
2GB content manager Luke Davis said: “We’re so excited to welcome Mark Geyer to the 2GB and Nine Radio family! ‘MG’ is a league legend, an experienced media personality, a business owner, a voice of Western Sydney – and never short of an opinion.
“We’re looking forward to his unique insights across the NRL season – and further strengthening our top-rating Continuous Call Team line-up as we enter our 39th year on air.”
Geyer said the timing of his move was ideal, allowing him to focus on his Penrith-based gym, MG Active, while stepping away from early-morning alarm clocks.
“I can train people in the morning, talk to Clinton in the afternoon, and then be completely cuckoo with the boys over the rugby league,” he said.
Clinton last week was announced as replacement for Chris O’Keefe, who stood down from the 2GB drive shift at the end of the year.
Geyer meanwhile joins returning members of the Continuous Call Team in 2025 – including, Darryl ‘The Big Marn’ Brohman, Mark ‘Piggy’ Riddell, Josh Morris and host and lead commentator, Mark Levy.
In November, Triple M announced Geyer was departing the station after 15 years on air there.
At the time, he told the Telegraph: “Working so long at one radio station was fantastic and now I have a couple of nibbles, a couple of solid leads from other media outlets. It’s good to be wanted.”
He hosted breakfast shows with Stuart MacGill, Gus Worland, Matty Johns, Jess Eva, Chris Page and Ray Warren, along with his most recent co-hosts Mick Molloy, Cat Lynch and Natarsha Belling.
Some fans were outraged and Camden man Terry Foley even started a petition online calling for Geyer to be reinstated.
Geyer was acknowledged for his services to rugby league and charity organisations with an Order of Australia honour after he used his radio show to raise more $400,000 for Brisbane flood victims with his Legends of Origin charity football match that was played in front of a sold out Parramatta Stadium in 2011.
