Nova Drive: Joel Creasy to replace Marty Sheargold

Nova has revealed who will replace Marty Sheargold on its award-winning drive show with an Aussie comedian to join Tim Blackwell and Kate Ritchie behind the microphone later this year.

Comedian Joel Creasey is getting used to the idea of becoming a Monday to Friday nine-to-fiver, or in his case, three-to-sixer.

Those are the regular hours Creasey has signed up to as the new co-host of Nova’s top rating drive show after fellow comedian Marty Sheargold stood down from the post.

From September 14, Creasey will join Kate Ritchie and Tim Blackwell for Nova’s national Kate, Tim and Joel show.

“I have not worked in an office for like 12 years,” Creasey told The Saturday Telegraph.

“In fact, the last time I did work in an office was in Perth as one of the Nova Cassanova promo guys so if anyone knows how to hand out an ice cold can of soft drink it is me.”

Sheargold departs Nova on Friday September 11 after a decade with the network.

It is a big change for Creasey into a full time gig after years freelancing across different television networks and touring the world with his critically acclaimed stand-up comedy.

“I am excited to talk and entertain people,” he said.

“At the end of the day, I genuinely do love making people laugh. I always say at the start of my stand-up shows, ‘you are not going to learn anything here, this is not going to be some deep insightful political commentary. In fact if anything you will probably leave dumber but gosh you will have a good time’. That will be my approach to radio as it is with everything.”

It is a hotly contested job, one of the most coveted in FM radio, with much speculation as to who would replace Sheargold with the show notching-up 26 consecutive radio survey’s as the top national drive show.

The trio of Kate, Tim and Joel have a proven chemistry with Creasey having been a regular guest on the show over the years.

Logistically, Melbourne-based Creasey is currently in stage four lockdown due to coronavirus, although he plans to get to Sydney to be in the studio with his colleagues as soon as possible.

“I am excited to have that banter each day,” Creasey, 30, said. “Kate and I are very competitive, there is a lot she can learn from me, and I have known Tim for ages. The three of us have spent loads of time together just socialising although every time we hang out it is after a few champagnes so really we can’t remember any of it so it will be a fresh slate on day one.”
