Nicole Kidman says she felt great pressure to do justice to the life of a legendary comedic actress in her new movie, which premiered in Sydney.

Nicole Kidman has brought it home for Christmas.

In a year where the red carpet calendar was lacking due to the pandemic, the Hollywood superstar wore festive green as she delivered perhaps the biggest film premiere of the year.

Kidman, with musician husband Keith Urban by her side, walked the red carpet at suburban cinema, the Hayden Orpheum Picture Palace in Cremorne to launch her much anticipated Amazon Prime Video film, Being the Ricardos.

“This is my history here,” Kidman told The Daily Telegraph, looking back at the landmark building. “This is my old stomping ground right here, the Orpheum and The Oaks.”

Kidman said she and Urban still visit the cinema when home in Australia.

“We still come here, we love it,” she said.

Being the Ricardos sees Kidman play iconic Hollywood comedic actor Lucille Ball while Javier Bardem is Ball’s husband, Desi Arnaz. Together, Ball and Arnaz starred in global hit TV show, I Love Lucy. The movie takes viewers behind the scenes in their life together.

This week, Kidman received a Golden Globe nomination for her performance, she has admitted to being nervous about taking on.

“It is a huge relief,” she said. “Relief because I was treading into territory I didn’t quite realise was so … I was like, ‘yikes, maybe I should have thought this through more’.”

Of seeing his wife as Ball, Urban said: “It is inspiring really because it has been a really challenging role for her. I think getting past the concept of it being this impersonation, which it isn’t meant to be, it is her portraying this extraordinary woman’s life on screen and that is what she does so well.”

Kidman’s mother, Janelle, sister, Antonia, and nieces and nephews were in the audience.

“I couldn’t be prouder, she is wonderful,” Janelle Kidman said. “She has done 65 movies I heard the other day. I am looking forward to seeing this. We have got everybody together for Christmas.”

Urban brought celebrity friends too with his fellow Voice coaches Guy Sebastian, Jessica Mauboy and Rita Ora also walking the red carpet.

Ora was there with award-winning director partner, Taika Waititi.

Sebastian and wife Jules mused that it was the biggest red carpet they’d attended this year.

“It is a different place to do a red carpet, it is beautiful,” he said. “It has been a while. We were actually quite anxious on the way in because it is something we haven’t done for a while.”

Being the Ricardos is released on December 21.
