WHEN it comes to the television rating games, My Kitchen Rules has taken out the gold with it’s return to the screen last night.
The Channel 7 reality show reaped the rewards of heavily promoting a team’s walk out, becoming the number one entertainment program on Sunday night with 1.34 million viewers across the five city metro.
This was despite the fact that the team isn’t kicked off the competition till later in the week.
The reality show also beat the heavily panned Commonwealth Games Closing Ceremony and the launch of Channel 9’s The Voice.
The Commonwealth Games Closing ceremony, which was hosted by Joh Griggs and Basil Zempilas, averaged 1.14m viewers, however from 9pm viewers started turning over. Only 750 000 metro viewers were left watching right at the end.
Meanwhile, The Voice’s launch numbers of 1.03 million were down on last year’s premiere of 1.28 million.
The show’s coaches Delta Goodrem, Boy George and Kelly Rowland returned for the blind auditions, alongside newcomer Joe Jonas.
However, in a bad bit of timing, while Rowland was also critiquing artists on Channel 9, she was also performing onstage with Beyonce during her historic Coachella performance last night.
Beyonce made history as the first black female to headline the popular music festival, which subsequently was trending worldwide on twitter as #Beychella. Much like she did during her Superbowl performance in 2013, Queen Bey called upon her Destiny’s Child band mates Rowland and Michelle Williams to join her on the famed California stage for a mini reunion.
Rowland was able to be in two places at once because the blind auditions were actually filmed in Sydney at the start of the year.
However she wasn’t the only one that was going to be in two places at once. The Daily Telegraph understands that Delta Goodrem was asked to perform at the Closing Ceremony of the Commonwealth Games, meaning she would appear on Channel 7 at the same time as Channel 9. So to avoid the clash, Goodrem performed at the Opening Ceremony.
