Mick Molloy is returning to Sydney radio in 2023 as the star of Triple M’s rebooted breakfast show.
Radio network Southern Cross Austereo announced Molloy’s signing yesterday as radio’s end of season Hunger Games slaughter continued.
Molloy, who found fame originally as one half of the Martin and Molloy radio team in the nineties before the two men fell out, will be joined on the show by retired rugby league star Mark Geyer.
Yesterday Molloy confirmed his return to Sydney’s airwaves saying:
“I’m excited to be returning to my spiritual home at Triple M and look forward to getting amongst it in the Sydney breakfast radio scene. After a year away from the radio waves I wanted a new challenge and Sydney is the perfect opportunity. I’m also looking forward to working with MG and swapping stories. And if this doesn’t work out, I’ll throw my hat in the ring at The Project. I hear there’s an opening.”
Geyer has been holding the fort at Triple M breakfast alongside The Block's Jess Eva and radio all-rounder Chris “Pagey” Page since Lawrence “Moonman” Mooney was sacked in November 2021 amid rumours of behind the scenes turmoil on his Moonman in the Morning radio program.
He this year successfully sued SCA for breach of contract.
Triple M had a dreadful year in the radio ratings falling to eight position with a 3.7 share behind (in order) KIISFM, 2GB, ABC-702, SmoothFM, WSFM, NOVA and the struggling 2DAY.
TripleM’s chief content officer Dave Cameron described Molloy’s signing as “a triumph”.
Geyer said: “I cannot wait to work with Micky, who I regard as radio royalty.”
