Michael Buble’s Australian love affair: ‘You just get me here’

Michael Buble once guest starred on iconic Aussie comedy Kath & Kim. Now, the Canadian superstar has his sights set on appearing in another local TV show.

Michael Buble famously once guest starred on iconic Aussie comedy Kath & Kim. Now, the Canadian superstar has his sights set on appearing in another local TV show.

“I am putting myself up for the new The Office,” Buble told Confidential.

“Somebody f***ing listen to me, I will be the biggest arsehole, I’ll do whatever you want me to do, put me in please. This is my audition. However you want me to belittle myself to be in the Australian Office.”

Ricky Gervais played lead character David Brent in the British version of The Office while Steve Carrell was Michael Scott in the US series.

It was recently revealed that a female-led version of the comedy is in production in Australia.

Comedian Felicity Ward will play the lead of Hannah Howard with the support cast to include Shari Sebbens, Pallava Sharda and Josh Thomas.

The co-production between BBC Studios, Bunya Entertainment and Amazon Studios is the 13th adaptation of The Office globally as the show has been remade in countries including India, Israel, Canada, Chile, France and Poland.

“Listen, the English Office, the original, was awesome. The American Office was awesome. But if there was ever a country that was going to take this show to another level, there is only one place and let me be a part of that somehow. Please make it happen.

“I manifested this with Kath & Kim. I will make myself available. I will fly, I will do what I have to do. I am there for it.”

Buble scored his spot on Kath & Kim after meeting actor Magda Szubanski on a flight.

“I was pissing myself laughing and on the aeroplane was Magda,” he explained.

“They were like, ‘why are you laughing?’ And she was like, ‘well I am on this show’. That is how it all happened. I was like, ‘please can I come on your show’.

“And it is still a career highlight for me.”

‘You just get me’: Michael Buble’s Aussie love affair

Every star visiting Sydney says they love Australia – Michael Buble truly means it.

The Canadian superstar singer has been a regular visitor Down Under for two decades with Australia one of his biggest markets globally.

This time, his family are along for the ride, making it a working holiday for the artist who has had numerous number one albums and singles here and sells out stadium shows.

“There are certain places where you just feel like family. You just get me here,” Buble told The Daily Telegraph in Sydney.

“I was so frustrated by my lack of presence here the last four years. I knew it was very wrong for me. This is the most disconnected I have ever been with this country in over 20 years. It is the longest time I haven’t come.”

The five-time Grammy Award winner last toured Australia in February 2020, right as Covid hit was shutting down the world.

Tomorrow and Saturday, he plays Sydney’s Qudos Bank Arena as part of his Higher Tour for his eleventh studio album of the same name.

His parents, Lewis and Amber, are here with him. Wife, Luisana Lopilato, and their kids, Noah, Elias, Vida and Cielo, are coming too.

“My whole family, this is our favourite country,” Buble said, promoting his six Chemist Warehouse fragrances, the latest of which is titled Love Notes.

“It is a tour/holiday. My wife and kids are coming in a few days, they had to finish off school and my son’s lacrosse tournament and then they are coming. This is like the one place where it is a holiday slash work. Your winter is our heaven, it is beautiful here. We love it here.”

Of his fragrances, he joked of other celebrities that have perfumes on the market.

“The truth is … what is really important is that people see me in the same light as Ariana Grande, Rihanna and Dolly Parton,” he laughed. “She (Dolly) is kicking arse.”

As for music and the future, Buble isn’t sure what is next and he is okay with that.

“I feel that I have for 20 years been in a cycle of making music and promoting music and touring music,” he explained.

“And the truth is that for the first time in over 20 years I really can honestly say I don’t know what is next and that is the truth. I am excited.

“There are things that I’ve always wanted to do and never done. There are challenges that I’ve wanted to take and I’ve always put so much emphasis on the music and the records and the tours that I didn’t leave much time for other things.

“For me, it is time to enjoy being a dad for a little while, to take some time to do other things. Music will always be the base of what I do.”
