Gogglebox’s new family are custodians of a proud Indigenous culture

Season 16 of Gogglebox will bring new faces to our TV screens — with four friends who are young and proud custodians of their Indigenous culture and identity joining the popular show.

New Season of Gogglebox

After a small hiatus, Gogglebox is back and will hit our screens with a brand new family.

Season 16 will see the arrival of the latest addition to the popular program, which includes Kevin, Bob, Jared, and Mia, four friends who are young, proud and staunch custodians of their Indigenous culture and identity.

“I am way too excited about this,” said Kevin, a Wakka Wakka and South Sea islander man who grew up on Butchulla country in Queensland’s southeast.

“It feels very surreal that it is all actually happening … Bob and I used to watch the show and really enjoyed it.”

Despite hundreds of families and friends auditioning to be a part of the Logie Award-winning show, Kevin and his crew believe they were selected thanks to their unique offering.

“I reckon we bring a really unique and fresh perspective because there hasn’t been a First Nations family on Gogglebox before,” the university lecturer said.

Close friend Mia, who works in the tertiary sector managing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Collections and Services, hoped her appearance on the show would teach Australians about her culture.

“We are using blackfella terms and Aboriginal English slang as well,” she said.

“So there might be some terms and words the general public haven’t heard before, so hopefully there is an education around some of the slang which is used.

“And we hope blackfellas watch the show and it encourages more mob to apply for some of these television shows because we do bring a unique perspective.”

Gogglebox Australia will dedicate the first episode of the season to Di Kershaw who sadly recently passed. Di was a much-loved Gogglebox family member who joined husband of more than 50 years, Mick, on their couch each season and delivered countless memorable moments.

Gogglebox Australia returns Wednesdays at 7.30pm from August 24 on FOXTEL.
