The rising cost of rent, wages, power and produce has forced a Sydney cafe to raise the price of its smashed avocado side dish to $10.90
Little Jack Horner is a popular corner cafe in a prime location across from Coogee Beach and has raised eyebrows for the price of its breakfast sides, including smashed avocado.
The price tag is more than five times the price you’d pay for single avocado, which is currently in season, in grocery stores.
The all-day restaurant and bar also charges $11.90 for a side of haloumi, and $9.90 for a side of bacon. All dishes are designed to be shared.
Another nearby, beachside cafe, charges $5 for a side of haloumi and $7 for their sides of bacon and avocado.
The price increases — which management says is the first the cafe has had in more than three years and which came into effect over Christmas — has drawn comments from local Google reviewers.
“Great location, but not value for money,” one reviewer wrote last week.
Another added: “Went for breakfast over the Easter long weekend. Food was good but we found this place grossly overpriced.”
Owner BJ McHatton said the cost of everything from his plates, to his plants had increased dramatically.
“The whole industry is in a course correct,” he said.
McHatton said while he was “actively searching” for ways to pass on more value to the customer, the venue was a premium product.
“We are a quality product. Everything we offer is premium, from our location to our chefs. People might not see the value in that, but we are more than food on a plate,” he said.
“The purpose of our business is to create memorable experiences for our team and our guests and we are on a mission to create three million memorable experiences for our customers by 2030.”
