Let’s laugh with Lindsay Lohan, not at her

Sure, she doesn’t know any of our celebrities. And her dance moves aren’t great. But why do we feel the need to disrespect The Masked Singer’s Lindsay Lohan? It’s just plain nasty, says Jonathon Moran.

The Masked Singer Australia

I write in defence of Lindsay Lohan. Why do we as Australians feel the need to disrespect any visiting celebrities working on a reality show? It is petty and just downright nasty.

The Hollywood actor, singer, reality star and socialite is by far one of the best parts of unexpected hit reality show, The Masked Singer.

Sure, she doesn’t know any of our local celebrities.

Sure, her dance moves aren’t great.

And sure, we’re all waiting for something to go wrong whenever the camera focuses on her.

I have been glued to each and every episode of The Masked Singer and that is in large part because I can’t get enough of watching Lindsay Lohan as Lindsay Lohan. Not the actor or the woman in pap shots entering a New York club, it is the real Lindsay Lohan.

And as it turns out, after all she’s been through in life — many highs and many, many lows — she seems to be pretty normal. As normal as Lindsay Lohan can be anyway.

To be fair, when I spoke to Lohan recently for a 10 minute phone chat about the series, I was expecting the worst. Reading reports of diva behaviour and given her history, I went in with caution.

Truth is, she was divine, super chill and genuinely happy to talk about anything. Nothing was off limits, which is too often the case these days with other big names.

Reports this week suggesting Lohan shouldn’t return for a second season of the show are stupid and wrong.

Without her, there would be no show. Her one liners on the show are fabulous — referencing her ex Danny Cipriani, being mates with Conrad Sewell or why she doesn’t go to Coachella anymore.

Analyst Peter Cox earlier this week told News Corp the 33-year-old doesn’t contribute anything and “lacks local knowledge”.

“I think it looks silly for the show and lowers the credibility of it. I don’t think she contributes anything to the show and she lacks local knowledge,” he said.

What Cox is missing is that The Masked Singer isn’t seeking credibility. It is just good old fashioned fun, and that is why it has worked.

It isn’t mean spirited. It is funny and easy to watch.

When Lohan guessed Mahalia Violet Barnes as one of the contestants, it was obvious she’d been googling or someone had suggested for her to search for Jimmy Barnes kids based on one of the clues.

Granted, most of Lohan’s guesses have been off. That’s the fun of it though. Lets laugh with her, not at her. And lets not scare her off coming back next year.
