Two weeks ago, Asha Boswarva was getting ready for her HSC exams and now, the 18-year-old is preparing to walk the red carpet at the AACTA Awards.

The Sydney high school student has won the award for Best Female New Talent, for her role in Foxtel’s Lambs of God and she told Confidential that it’s been a dream come true.

“Last year, I was at home watching the AACTA awards on TV and it was then I realised the awards are truly the Oscars or BAFTAs of Australia,” she said,

“I could barely dare to dream I could one day simply be at the event, let alone win an award.”

Boswarva, who plays Young Margarita in the series, was overcome with emotion when she learned she had won.

“I felt like a winner when I was nominated. The nomination came through a couple of days before my HSC maths exam and it was a brilliant distraction,” she said.

“For the first time this year the AACTA’s decided to announce the Best New Talent award before the ceremony, so when I heard I won, I was in a singing lesson and my phone was going crazy, I slipped outside and received the news and got very emotional, it felt surreal.

“I don’t know if it has fully hit me yet that I have won. I was thrilled but also really pleased because it’s also for everyone who has supported me and given me a shot at doing what I love. Very happy for everyone at Lambs of God – a win for all of us.”

The teen will present at the AACTA industry luncheon next month before attending the ceremony.

She said preparation for the luncheon has been more nerve-racking than HSC exams.

“It’s definitely more nerve-racking currently prepping to present at the luncheon than for exams,” she said.

“Although me having to write an essay on an ancient Egyptian pharaoh’s foreign policy was daunting, it’s quite a different energy prepping for presenting filled with nerves but loads of excitement!

“It’s crazy, I’m going from presenting at my high school assembly to presenting at the AACTA awards luncheon with a room packed with television and film legends – no pressure!”

When asked what she plans to do with her time after finishing HSC exams and winning an AACTA award, Boswarva said she hopes to one day work with the likes of her idol Nicole Kidman.

“I would love to work with Australian film and television producer, Bruna Papandrea. She has put female characters at the centre of her projects,” she said.

“She’s an incredible Australian success story internationally and is passionate about telling Australian stories.

“I also recently read Liane Moriarty’s novel Nine Perfect Strangers and know that Nicole Kidman has the option on the book. There’s a character, Zoe who I would love to play. Nicole if you’re looking for a Zoe, I’d love to audition for you!”

Lambs of God has been nominated for a record 18 AACTA awards.

The 2019 AACTA Awards Ceremony presented by Foxtel will take place on Wednesday 4 December at The Star and broadcast on Channel 7.
