What Kyle and Jackie O hate about each other

Kyle Sandilands and Jackie O Henderson remain king and queen of the FM breakfast radio slot despite losing some of their audience in the first official survey results of 2020.

The Kyle and Jackie O Show clocked in at 9.9 per cent for the Monday to Friday breakfast bracket, beating out WSFM’s Jonesy and Amanda (9.1 per cent) despite a drop of 1.5 per cent.

It is their 12th consecutive survey win.

Nine’s 2GB remains the top broadcaster across the board with an overall leading market share of 13.2 per cent, up 1.1 percentage points.

ABC Sydney came in second with 8.9 per cent (no change) while WSFM registered 8.4 per cent (up 0.9 per cent).

2GB’s slight increase comes months after parent company Macquarie Media Limited parted ways with Steve Price, who was replaced by TV newsreader Deb Knight.

Breakfast host Alan Jones is still the overall king of the airwaves with a 14.8 per cent share (up 0.1 per cent), followed by ABC Sydney with 11.8 per cent (up 1.3 per cent).

Taking over from Jones at 9am on 2GB is Ray Hadley, who has had a spectacular survey result, jumping 3.7 per cent to a leading share of 17.5 per cent. His nearest rival is WSFM at 8.5 per cent (up 0.9 per cent).

Nova 96.9’s Kate, Tim and Marty are the number one drive station with 10.3 per cent (up 1.1 per cent), knocking KIIS afternoon duo Will McMahon and Woody Whitelaw from the top spot to number two FM but fourth place overall with a nine per cent share (down 0.6 per cent).

Also in drive, Ben Fordham’s 2GB show came in at number one drive station on the AM dial with a 10.2 per cent share (up 1.7 per cent), followed by ABC Sydney at 9.1 per cent (down 0.2).

“We’re thrilled and thank everyone for tuning in,” Fordham told Confidential.

“With bushfires and coronavirus concerns, people are seeking the latest info and answers so maybe that has played a role in the result. We work out backsides off to produce the best radio show every single day so to see this result is rewarding. I am up against some of the best broadcasters in the country. Kate, Tim and Marty at Nova are always up near the top or at the top and Richard Glover is the best broadcaster on the ABC. So to do well up against those people is a healthy achievement but we don’t take it for granted.”

THE PR JUGGERNAUT DRIVING KYLE AND JACKIE O

With the first radio ratings dropping, Confidential has taken a look at the people who have Kyle and Jackie O’s every move accounted for.

While the pair are the frontline stars, there is a whole team working behind the scenes to ensure the show goes smoothly and without a hitch day in and day out.

Known for his outrageous comments, which have often gotten Sandilands in hot water, one thing that makes this team stand out is the fact they have a censor on staff whose job it is to listen to the show and place a beep sound if anything inappropriate is said.

The pair has been together for almost 20 years, topping the FM ratings for much of that time with their mix of celebrity interviews and show business gossip.

They are promoted with the tagline, ‘expect the unexpected’, and that is what Sandilands in particular has delivered time and time again.
