Under siege hospitality boss Jon Adgemis’s career as a Hollywood film producer gets green light, as suppliers from his struggling Public Hospitality group remain unpaid.

The Daily Telegraph can reveal that one struggling supplier, who waited over six months for payment, only had their invoice paid yesterday after they promised to go to the media.

The former KPMG investment banker is an Executive Producer on the Hollywood film Oh Canada, which stars Richard Gere, Uma Thurman and Australia’s own rising star Jacob Elordi.

Adgemis runs the production company Two Jon’s with John Molloy, brother of comedian Mick Molloy. The two have producing credits on the film which is directed by industry legend Paul Schrader, of American Gigolo fame and premiered at the prestigious Cannes Festival in May receiving a four-minute standing ovation.

Mr Adgemis’ model and actor partner Megan Mackenzie also has a role in the film and last month attended the glamorous red carpet event.

MacKenzie at the time said the emotions she felt were “indescribable.”

‘To say it’s surreal to be apart of this production is an understatement,” she said.

The movie’s inclusion and screening at Cannes comes at a time when Adgemis’ Public Hospitality business teeters on the brink. It also came at the same time Adgemis’ home and office was raided by Australian Taxation Office officials.

In June, after months of turmoil, the company secured $400m in debt funding. That hasn’t however stopped the floodgates of businesses and property’s leaving the group.

In a statement a Public Spokesperson confirmed that “Mr Adgemis is a joint shareholder in self-funded production company Two Jons. As a shareholder he is credited as an executive producer in any Two Jons production.

“Jon has not put any funds into Two Jons for over 18 months, it is a self-funded production company and not related to Public in any way. Megan is an independent woman with her own career and has upcoming actor credits including Last King of the Cross 2.”

Last week companies behind two of Mr Adgemis’ pubs — the Kurrajong Hotel in Erskineville and the Rose Hotel on Oxford St in Paddington — were put into voluntary external administration, despite the venues being refurbished in recent years.

And the company has also lost swish Greek restaurant Alpha in the CBD.

Public Hospitality took over operations of the Hellenic Club funded venue six months ago, however it’s now being run by Con Dedes of the Dedes Group which has venues including Flying Fish and Sala.

Well respected chef Clayton Wells also left Public Hospitality, despite the former KPMG banker securing debt funding.

The Telegraph has also spoken to multiple suppliers who are still awaiting payment from Public Hospitality. Many wished to remain anonymous out of fear of never being paid at all.

Logan Thompson of Good Hands Sign Co, worked on the signage for late-night Camperdown diner Derrell’s, one of the group’s poster venues.

The work was completed in November, when the venue opened, however up until Monday he was awaiting payment of $3000.

“We’re a small business who help a large portion of Sydney’s already struggling hospitality venues advertise effectively,” Mr Thompson said. “When conglomerates hurt us like this, it robs us of the ability to help many others within the industry.”

Public said it “is simply not true that staff have not been paid. As previously stated, Public has been paying staff and suppliers as new facilities become available as part of our refinancing through June. We have made significant supplier payments this month and working through making further supply payments as facilities become over the coming weeks.”

Mr Adgemis’s production credits include the television surfing series Baron, which his partner Mackenzie also starred, as well as miniseries The Gloaming. He’s also got producer credits on two other films, Boys in the Trees and Last Cab to Darwin.

Oh, Canada meanwhile is being represented by Arclight for international distribution, although so far it is unclear if it has received a cinematic release outside of France.

Film critic bible Rotten Tomatoes has Oh, Canada pegged with a 70 per cent rating. There is no suggestion Adgemis used business funds for his film endeavours.
