In 2016, Chloe Esposito became the first Australian to win an Olympic medal in modern pentathlon.
The 27-year-old athlete presumed her coveted Rio Games gold medal win would secure her sponsorship deals and a legion of fans interested in the unique sport. However it was far from her reality.
“When I got off the plane from Rio, I literally thought companies would be throwing themselves at me saying ‘we want you, you got the gold medal’,” Esposito told Sunday Confidential.
“And I knew we only had eight gold medal wins at the last Olympics, so I thought it would be a great opportunity for a lot of us. But it wasn’t the case.
“It was so hard to get my first sponsor which ended up being my local sporting club. I guess it is because it is a small sport the pentathlon. I know it has nothing to do with me.
“Companies want sports that are well known in Australia — swimming and football. But I am chopping away at it. I’ve got a manager.”
And the perseverance has paid off with Esposito’s first proper endorsement deal being with Jockey, which is sponsoring the Australian team across the Games next year as their official underwear sponsor.
“I’ve only ever done one shoot like this before,” Esposito said of underwear shoot.
