Frustrated at the direction of her career, Jessica Mauboy has parted ways with her agent of 16 years.
Confidential can reveal 30-year-old Mauboy has ended her professional relationship with long-time agent David Champion, of Parade Management, and will manage herself while she looks for a replacement.
She has also enlisted publicist Camille Thioulouse and rehired stylist Mikey Ayoubi, who was sidelined following the now infamous Melbourne Cup outfit debacle.
In 2015, Mauboy pulled out of a performance at the Melbourne Cup citing a panic attack. At the time, there were rumours that she pulled out because she was wearing shoes from David Jones when Myer sponsored the event.
Those close to Mauboy say her departure from Champion marks a new era for the popular singer, who Australia fell in love with in 2006 when she appeared on Australian Idol.
Mauboy has been with recording giant Sony Music Australia since her appearance on the reality television show.
Most recently she released her “very personal” album, Hilda, through Sony, which owns Parade Management.
“Jess has been with Champo since she was 14,” one source close to Mauboy told Sunday Confidential.
“She came off the TV show and was handed an agent and the record label but she has never been able to choose the people she was working with. She has grown up, particularly in the past year. She has turned 30, become engaged and she sees herself differently now. She is taking control of her life and her career and the direction she wants to go.”
A spokesman for Mauboy confirmed the news, saying the split was amicable.
“It has been an amazing 16 years for both Jess and Champo,” the spokeswoman said.
“There is no bad blood between the pair and Jess is so grateful for everything he has done for her, but it was time for Jess to make a change.”
