IMOGEN ANTHONY could never be accused of being a follower. The outspoken girlfriend of radio star Kyle Sandilands made an appearance at TAFE Fashion Design Studio’s The Innovators parade, dressed in a tinsel-embellished jumpsuit and PVC thigh-high boots.
Her unique ensemble, which would normally have raised eyebrows, looked fairly tame among some of the interesting looks sent down the runway by the fashion design graduates, such as denim and leather chaps, and doona jackets, plastic veils and strapless frocks held up by aeroplane seatbelts.
Anthony said she was passionate about supporting young designers who thought outside the box.
“So many people don’t get given a chance, and in Australia a lot of people don’t experiment,” she said.
Last year’s Fashion Week saw Anthony wearing a bejewelled mask as she made her way through Eveleigh’s Carriageworks.
Asked about her love of pushing the boundaries, the passionate animal activist said fashion should be fun.
“Everyone takes themselves so seriously,” she said. “I’m all for people wearing streamlined business shirts and pinstripe suits, but just let me do what I do, too; it’s dress-up, let’s be honest, and it’s fun!”
Anthony’s ensemble had been designed by Angela Lowe-Liddell, whose label EWOL appeared in last year’s The Innovators show.
“She dressed me for Rihanna’s Fenty party at Coachella,” Anthony said.
Lowe-Liddell said it was great to have an Australian personality brave enough to experiment with style. “My aesthetic is out there; I don’t conform,” she said.
“Everybody needs to have a bit of colour in their life and when you go out, you want to be able to have that crazy shell you put on, and Imogen epitomises that.”
